    George McGovern for President
Every Senator in the chamber is partly responsible for sending 50.000 young
Americans to an early grave.
This Chamber reeks of blood
Every Senator here is partly responsible for that human wreckage at Waiter
Reed and Bethesda Naval and all across our land—young boys without legs, or
arms, or genitals or faces or hopes.
There aren't many of these blasted and broken boys who think this war is a
glorious venture
Don’t talk to them about bugging out. or national honor, or courage.
It doesn’t take any courage at all for a Congressman, or a Senator, or a President
to wrap himself in the flag and say we are staying in Vietnam. Because it isn't
our blood that is being shed.
But we are responsible for these young men and their lives and their hopes and if
we don’t end this foolish, damnable war. those men will someday curse us for our
pitiful willingness to let the executive carry the burden the constitution places
upon us.
Senator George McGovern
September 1,1970
before the United States Senate
In ISO McGovern called American policy in Vietnam a
'policy of moral debacle and defeat.*' It was hard to
oppose the war tn ISO when John Kennedy waa stall
President, especially when you’re a freshman Senator
from South Dakota and a personal friend of the
president's
But in 1983 George McGovern stood on the floor of the
Senate and demanded total withdraw! of American
forces and aid from the corrupt South Vietnamese
government
If only America had listened to George McGovern in
1963
Now more people are listening to McGovern But we
think we should do more than listen to him
We thu* we should make him President of the United
Stales
The War. Milliard A Foreign Pottey
Within 34 hours after his inaguraticn President
McGovern will begin to bring every American home
from Indochina
Then our Prisoners of War will be released
Nest President McGovern would declare a general
amnesty for all men who went abroad, underground or to
yail rather than fight in tins mindless war An amnesty
with no "bandages of servitude’ such as two years of
national service.
1 “resident McGovern would put an end to the draft, cut
the wasteful military budget by 30 billion dollars and
stop supporting dictatorships like those in Greece and
Pakistan
Owr Task
"We have even a harder task to challenge Americans to
end the worship of more and more material goods, and
begin to cherish the undeniable worth of our fellow
human beliefs" McGovern says He continues in our
rush to build and conquer we have neglected our
humanity In out rush toward wealth and power we have
forsaken our ideals "
Women
Women must not continue their traditional role in our
society America must step down off it’s male pedestal.
“One injustice which we have ignored too king is the role
of women in our society,” McGovern says.
Gloria Stetnem is supporting George McGovern. She
knows he really supports the equal rights amendment,
the woman's right to choose in abortion and President
McGovern will involve women in every branch of
government at every level The Supreme Court, the
National Security Council and the Cabinet all need
women
Ee—lies and Taxes
“The American gospel of wealth is painfully evident in
the way we handle our money We worship at the shrine
of corporate capitalism In General Motors do we trust.
We have allowed corporations to destroy our en
vironment. deceive mar consumers, and reap billions in
profit while the poor and working people pay the bill.” So
spoke McGovern
McGovern says, as President "1 would follow the
precedent of Robin Hood in taking from the rich and
giving to the poor .. if I become President the party will
be over for the big boys at Standard Oil and AT & T."
For one thing President McGovern will demand all
defense contractors to set aside 12.5 per cent of their
profits in reserve and use these profits to finance the
contractors conversion to peace time production
President McGovern will at least double the tax rates on
huge corporations such as General Motors and Georgia
Pacific as well as increasing the tax rates on
millionaires
McGovern Proposals and Positions
A new “super agency' " * Pentagon for Ecology, to stop
pci tut ion in America Proposed first year budget for the
agency : S3 billion
McGovern is the only Senator who supports the Black
Congressional Caucus Program As President be will
continue to support this program and similar programs
to ensure justice for Americans of minority races.
200,000 scholarships for poor students instead of the SST.
An additional school and hospital in every county in the
Country instead of $30 billion in military excess.
Public Transit instead of ABM.
Low-income housing instead of 250,000 US troops in
Europe.
Job training, adequate psychiatric help, probation and
work release programs instead of the despair of Attica.
Food instead of hunger in America.
There is more
Beyond these reforms McGovern says, “We have a
much greater need. For we have money and power, but
ultimately those possessions do not make life worth
while.”
“What we need most of all is the assurance that we live
in a nation where we care about each other.”
George McGovern does not believe “that fear and hatred
and death are the ultimate forces in the universe.” We
don’t either.
We do not promise an easy campaign. We will have to
fight for every vote. After all we are challenging the
interests who have the money, and who have controlled
this country for too long. They aren't going to give up
without a fight for every vote.
We are willing to make that fight because it must be
made. We are willing to make the fight because we
believe that if enough people work we can make
McGovern president and turn this country around before
we end up a warring people, mired in a polluted nation or
drowned in our own selfishness.
We need your help. We need your ideas, time, money and
spirit.
Join us. George McGovern will make a great President
for America because he will make great changes in
America.
