Speed reading class open
Tire University’s Reading and Study Skills Center still has a few
openings in its Monday evening speed reading class. The class is
designed to help people increased their reading speeds while main
taining, or improving comprehension.
Special attention is given to working with the reading material
used by each student in his everyday life.
The class meets each Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in 265 Condon
through Winter Term. Fee is $15 for the general public, or $7.50 for
members of the University faculty, staff or student body.
Prospective students may register or obtain more information by
calling the Reading and Study Skills Center on the campus, 686-3226.
Teaching fellow receives award
Ronald Johnson, doctoral candidate in the University’s part
ment of English, is the 1971-72 recipient of the Rudolf Ernst Graduate
Fellowship.
Johnson is a graduate of Gonzaga University and received his
Master of Arts degree from Colorado State University. He has been at
the University of Oregon since 1969 and is a Graduate Teaching Fellow
in English.
The Ernst award will enable Johnson to complete the work on his
doctoral dissertation, which is a study of the satire of John Wilmot,
Earl of Rochester.
The annual Fellowship was established in 1967 by Mrs. Alice
Henson Ernst.
Demo Forum to feature McAlmond
Phil McAlmond, Democrat, the first announced candidate for the
state treasurer’s office currently held by Robert Straub, will speak to
the Lane County Demo Forum at noon.
He will speak on his upcoming campaign and his idea of what the
position entails.
Speaker to discuss forest use tonight
Jim Weaver, former congressional candidate, will speak before
the Cottage Grove Kiwanis Club6:30p.m. tonight in Pep’s Restaurant.
His talk will deal with forest use and conservation.
Senator Fadeley to speak on cigarette tax
State Senator Edward Fadeley (D-Lane), will discuss the up
coming cigarette tax measure and Oregon’s financial condition at a
public meeting at 8 tonight in Harris Hall on the Lane County
Court house grounds.
The meeting’s sponsors, the Oregon Education Association and
the Oregon State Employees Association, are advocating the passage
of the tax measure on Jan. 18. The two organizations will make brief
presentations concerning the need for approval of the cigarette tax
measure from the standpoints of public education and the state
government,then answer questions from the audience.
The Senior Citizen and Youth Coalition, which also supports the
passage of the tax, will announce a drive to collect votes at the
meeting.

Thefts, rapes reported in campus area
Police are investigating two thefts—one from the University’s
drama department and tb*' other from a student’s residence—and two
rapes which occurred in £ campus area.
The incidents reported to Eugene Police in the last four days in
clude:
The l Diversity theatre department was the victim of thieves early
Wednesday morning when several tape recorders >.ere stolen from a
sound booth at the University Theater.
Eugene police received report of the theft at 4:55 a.m. The in
vestigating officer said the thieves entered through a trap door in the
theater, using bolt cutters to get through the locks. The incident is
under investigation.
Two University students were the victims of burglars who took an
estimated 11.125 worth of stereo speakers, amplifiers, and turntables.
Also reported stolen from their residence at 960 E. I9th Ave. were
three bottles of wine, about 110 record albums and a hunting knife. The
theft took place while the students were on Christmas vacation. The
thieves apparently entered the dwelling through an unlocked rear
window and broke the door to the basement bedroom off its hinges.
Eugene police Tuesday arrested Gerald T. Bowen 22. of 359
Seneca, Eugene on a charge of attempted rape.
Bowen was arrested after a Eugene police officer received a
report that a woman had been attacked in the area of 14th and Hilyard
Streets
The suspect was later identified by the victim.
Bowen was released from Eugene City-County Jail after bail was
set at $2,005
In a separate incident a woman was raped in her home early
Wednesday morning in the area of 12th and High streets. P'**ice are
seeking a man described as a white male adult, between U, and 30
years «f age. approximately five foot, nine inches tall with long blond
hair in connection with the incident.
