Guy out; Glass,
Anderson doubtful
The Ducks not only lost the game and a chance for
the Rose Bowl Saturday, but one and possibly as
many as three players.
Out for the season is defensive tackle T im Guy.
who strained the ligaments in his right knee in
Oregon's 31-21 loss to Washington State. Guy was
operated on Monday
Flanker Leland Glass and tailback Reecie An
derson may miss Saturday's contest in Colorado
Springs with Air Force. Glass injured his left knee
and according to Coach Jerry Frei "it will take a
miraculous recovery for him to play. I don't think it
will happen But it could " Anderson sprained his
ankle
Also suffering from ankle sprains, but ready to go
against the Falcons, are defensive back Bill Steber
i and tight end Chuck Bradley.
Mallards stop FSU
3-2 in comeback win
Adrian Kahtany captained the Portland Staters as they came to
Eugene determined to lead the Vikings to a share of first place in the
Oregon Intercollegiate Soccer Association.
The Mallards were just as determined to stop the Vikings and hold
Kahtany. who had scored 29 goals in eight games and is on his way to
the league scoring records, to zero points. The scene was set for the
game of the week in the league and it was, as the Mallards won 3-2.
Portland State carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and added another
before the Mallard offense could break through. Ron Brandsteder
finally kicked one through 13 minutes into the half, then , following the
tying goal by Dick Jonker, won the game with his second score, eight
minutes from the gun.
Kahtany scored one goal for the Viks as his team outshot the Oregon
team 28-13.
Water polo
In another game, the Coots continued their winning ways as they ran
their record to 4-0 shutting out LCC team, 2-0.
The strong Coot defense has allowed only one goal this season.
Coach Chuck Horner’s prediction of winning three of five games
during the water polo team’s California trip came within a double
over-time of coming true.
University of Pacific swimmers managed to put three in the cage
against a tiring team of Ducks to win that game, 13-10.
Earlier in the trip, Oregon had come from behind scoring four goals
in the last quarter to beat Chico State, 8-7, and had sunk Sacremento
State in a 14-10 meet. They had also lost to California, 10-7, via the late
goal routine and were outclassed by the San Jose J.V.’s in a 13-5 route.
San Jose’s varsity is top ranked in the nation so has a well stocked J.V.
team as well.
Leading the scoring were Gary Hidle and Tom Hill who each picked
up 12 goals over the five games. Bob Medlock, the most improved
player over the series, chipped in six more as did Steve Smith and
Larry Barr.
