Pre-registration eyed
at Co-op board meeting
Possible adoption of pre
registration at the University
was considered by Co-op board
members as a promising method
of improving student service and
store efficiency at their board
meeting Wednesday evening.
A committee appointed to
analyze the effects of pre
registration reported to the board
of probable economic and ef
ficiency benefits to the Co-op and
1 students.
The committee saw these goals
for the board: saving time and
money for students and the store,
and avoiding the “hassle” which
occurs at the beginning of each
term.
Getting orders in on time and
getting the correct number of
books ordered were cited as the
two major problems by a com
mittee looking at faculty or
dering.
The board felt the problems of
ordering were applicable to pre
registration and merged those
two committees for further
study.
In other business, Gunnar
Lundeberg, graduate student
member of the Co-op board, is no
longer registered at the
University. The board will be
considering applicants for his
position at their next meeting
Nov. 3.
Any interested graduate
student should submit his
qualifications at the Co-op before
Oct. 27.
A committee was named to
study a change in Co-op voting
procedures from mail ballot to in
person voting.

difference, not only in freshmen,
but the whole group of un
dergraduates.”
As an example, Bogen said last
year the chemistry department
had 900 students enrolled in its
classes, whereas this year there
are 1900.
“We were able to move our
resources around in the College
of Liberal Arts,” Moyer told the
faculty “I don’t know about the
professional schools, but still we
weren’t able to accommodate for
the switch completely.”
Clark then said another related
problem was that this year the
University has “fewer staff”
than before. “We do have to have
some advance planning and
communication in our
registration process.”
After Alpert made his com
ments on how academic advising
“stinks,” a question was asked
— “Why.”
Alpert answered,“I don’t think
I can give it all in too great a
detail.” The bigger freshman
class was one factor, he said And
“few specific assignments were
made to specific individual
students to specific places to go
for advising.” Ms. Fagot’s office
was open “from 7 a m. to 7 p.m.”
about a month ago, he added
Moyer said one reason for poor
advising was that faculty
members who were supposed to
be advising didn’t know how to
advise. The reason: not many
faculty attended advising
meetings during the summer.
"Advisers were not readily
equipped to answer questions,”
Moyer said. “Departmental
advisers would call Ms. Fagot’s
office, and they ( Ms. Fagot’s
office) were literally swamped
with calls. And the advisers
would have known if they had
attended the summer meetings.”
Moyer also said the Office of
Academic Advising was
swamped and “caring for the
students who had found no
openings was a very serious and
difficult problem.”
