Ducks,
Mallards
take soccer
openers
Both the Ducks and the
Mallards started their season
openers slowly, lacking the
coordination of a team that has
played together for a while,
falling behind on the scoreboard,
but coming back strong to win.
TTie Ducks won 4-2, the Mallards
took a 7-1 nod.
Tlie Ducks travelled to Port
land where the Germania team
took a 2-0 lead early in thehalf. It
was not until the last ten minutes
of the period that Alain Van
Doosselaere used assists from
Chris Briggs and Ken Brown to
break the ice.
Eight minutes into the second
half Alain nudged a Briggs
comer kick to Tony Parker who
tied the score at 2-2. A short while
later Van Doosselaere scored his
second goal with the help of
Brown and the Ducks were ahead
to stay. An insurance goal by
Brown and the steady goal
keeping of Dick Bartsch, who was
playing his first competitive
game of soccer, secured the win.
Bowling
The Oregon bowling team
scored a 15-10 victory over “The
Sizzler” in Metro-Classic league
action on the Emerald lanes
Thursday night. Dave Estabrook
led the team with a four point
sweep over his opponent with a
663 series.
Although freshman Bill Fomas
let his average slip to 197 during
the match he continued to in
dicate that he will be on the
varsity when collegiate league
play begins. He beat his opponent
for three of the four possible
points.

Tennis and handball buffs
won’t have to wait until winter or
spring terms to compete
anymore. Now there is com
petition in the fall.
The Men’s and Co-ed
Recreational Association, for
med last spring term, has
organized the all-University
Championships in order to
provide an opportunity for those
interested to compete.
Tennis play will begin around
Nov. 1 while handball will begin
approximately Nov. 8. Entry
forms may be picked up in the IM
office, 171 PE.
The men’s tennis singles are
open to all men students and
faculty and the mixed doubles to
all men and women students
and faculty. Ranked players
from any four year college or
university or those currently on
the Oregon team are excluded.
Participants make their own
arrangements for mixed tennis
doubles but those not able to find
a partner may select from a list
of names in the intramural office.
The type of men’s handball
tourney (ladder or single
elimination) hasn’t been
determined but will be decided
after entries have been sub
mitted.
Entry forms for tennis and
handball should be submitted in
PE 171 by Monday, Oct. 25, and
Monday, Nov. 1 for handball.
Competitors will officiate their
own matches. Tennis will be
played under USLTA rules while
handball will be played under
AAU rules.
Intramural Director John
Borchardt made these activities
possible by forming the Men’s
and Co-ed Recreational
Association. The board’s in
tention is to consider the
philosophy of intramurals and
the expansion of the program.
Crowded facilities and the
eligibility of participants are also
topics of interest to the board.
The board presently consists of
seven members with one un
dergraduate slot yet to be filled.
Currently serving on the board
are IM Director John Borchardt;
Assistant IM Director Max
Sancers; PE faculty member
Bert Borrevik; PE graduate
students Dick Bartsch and Bob
Robertson and undergraduate
member Wes Stinson, a senior in
journalism.
The tennis and handball
tournaments are the first ever
sponsored by the new recreation
board and if they prove popular
more will follow.

Table tennis
on the upswing
The Oregon Table Tennis
Club is keeping pace with the
rapid growth of table tennis in the
Pacific Northwest. For the
coming year the club, under the
direction of Jeff Kurtz, has
scheduled coaching clinics, in
tercollegiate team matches,
various tournaments, as well as
practice play in a weekly table
tennis league for the team
players.
Last year, stated Kurtz, “the
club consisted of a few dedicated
table tennis who practiced
against each other and went to a
few out of state tournaments.”
The table tennis club boasts the
best playing facilities in the state
of Oregon. Five new tables have
been purchased with three more
on order. The Women’s Physical
Education has been particularly
cooperative, giving the club
excellent facilities to play in.
According to Kurtz, by winter
quarter the club will have in
tercollegaite matches with
Oregon State, Portland State,
Willamette and Linfield, as well
as matches with the clubs in
Portland, Eugene and Salem.
The club is sponsoring a singles
and doubles competition tour
nament Saturday. Kurtz says this
tournament wil be open to all
players in the Northwest. It will
have ten sections, open to all
classes of players. Entry forms,
which include the times the
particular sections play, are
available from the recreation
desk at the Erb Memorial Union.
Interested players can also show
at 10 a.m. in room 352, Gerlinger
Annex, the site of the tour
nament.
Ratings of style of play will be
given upon arrival to determine
the class an individual will play
in.
Starting in November a league
will be held on Thursday
evenings at 7 p.m. in 352
Gerlinger Annex. All students,
faculty, staff and their im
mediate families are invited to
participate in this league.
Organized activities will be
scheduled for all levels of play.
Kurtz emphasizes “many of
these people are necessary to
make the league run effectively.”
For players just beginning, a
table tennis class is being taught
for the first time in the Northwest
here at Oregon. Again, through
the cooperation of the Physical
Education departments, a
beginning table tennis class
meets Tuesday and Thursdays at
8:30 a .m., and Kurtz would like to
encourage more students to
enroll.
Three open tournaments will be
scheduled in Portland this Nov.
13, Jan. 29, and Mar. 18. The club
is tentatively thinking of hosting
an intercollegiate team tour
nament for the West Coast.
