Bellisimo predicts
another OCB L title

nament, on TV, anywhere.”
Using this theory coach Lou
Bellisimo has built a long string
of good bowling teams and even
some great ones. Did you know
the all time high five-man team
average in national collegiate
bowling was set by Lou’s 1964)
Ducks as they piled up an.
amazing 1042 pin average, or that!
one of the few to come close to the
four figure level was another
Oregon team under, guess who,
when they knocked down an
average 995 pieces of wood per
game.
While last year’s team was not
quite so impressive they did
manage to win the Oregon
Collegiate Bowling League
championship with a 21-3 record
and then go on to take the Region
XIV crown over all the other
schools in the Northwest.
This year the OCBL has been
expanded to eight teams as
Portland Community College,
Willamette, Lewis and Clark and
Pacific University join Oregon
State, Portland State, Oregon
College of Education and the
Ducks.
Tackling this schedule will be
two of last year’s top four, Bill

VOLLEYBALL Friday is the
deadline for submitting team
entry forms for Intramural
volleyball competiton. Forms
ran be obtained and turned in at
the IM offices in P.E. 171.
MIXED LEAGUE- The IM
office is accepting a limited
number of team applications,
between now and Friday, for the
mixed touch football league
Teams will consist of four men
and three women
OFFICIALS—Officials are
needed for the IM touch football
schedule. Interested persons
should come to P.E. 171 or call
ext. 4113.
CLEATS The only cleats that
may be used in IM touch football
games are ones that are molded
rubber Removable cleats are not
allowed
FENCING—The organization
a I meeting of the fencing club will
be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the
EMU. All persons interested in
learning, as well as experienced
fencers, are welcome.

Looking over his personnel,
Lou predicts a repeat on last
year’s OCBL victory. He en
tertains high hopes that when the
national championships are held
in Long Beach, Calif., this year,
there will be Oregon bowlers on
the approaches. As for the girls
team, he will be taking over for
the first time this year. A small
turnout for the trials and the lack
of returning bowlers will make
winning a bit more difficult.
All three Duck teams will be
bowling throughout the fall and
winter, using identical schedules
for the most part. Home games
will be on the Emerald Lanes.
Band needs
more members
Those high-stepping heroes of
the gridiron, the Fighting Duck
Marching Band, is in need of even
more heroes to march at the Oct.
16 game against Washington.
Tuesday, the band had 70
members but band director
Bemette Dillon was hopeful of
appearing at the contest with an
88 to 110 piece group.
The band, which is making a
comeback after a one year ab
sence, is open to all students and
offers some benefits. Members
receive one credit and gain free
entrance to the Washington
game, the Oct. 23 San Jose State
game, the Nov. 13 California
game and the Nov. 20 Oregon
State game.
Interested students should be
at the music school band room at
3:15 today or contact Dillon at
ext. 3782.
Birds take AL flag;
Bucs edge Giants

The Baltimore Orioles claimed their third consecutive
American League championship Tuesday with a 5-3 win over Oakland.
The victory gave Baltimore a three-game sweep in the best-of-5
series after capturing the opening two games, 5-3, and 5-1.
It was Baltimore’s ninth consecutive playoff triumph over three
seasons.
They now face the National League champion Saturday in the
World Series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates moved a step closer to taking that crown
Tuesday by nipping the San Francisco Giants, 2-1, cm home runs by
Bob Robertson and Richie Hebner. The Bucs now hold a 2-1 lead in
their best-of-five series. San Francisco and the Pirates will meet today
in Pittsburgh.
Brooks Robinson’s bases-loaded single in the fifth sent the Orioles
to a 3-1 edge. The Orioles had scored in the opening inning off loser
Diego Segui and added two more runs in the seventh, keyed by Frank
Robinson’s run-scoring double.
The A’s got all their runs off winner Jim Palmer on homers.
Reggie Jackson hit a pair and Sal Bando one.
Hebner ripped an eighth inning home run, snapping a tie and sen
ding Pittsburgh to a 2-1 triumph over San Francisco in the National
League playoff series.
Hebner’s blast made a winner of surprise starter Bob Johnson,
who replaced Nelson Briles. Briles had aggravated a right thigh in
jury. The blow made a loser of Juan Marichal, who allowed only four
hits.
Johnson scattered five hits in eight innings, walking two and
striking out seven. The only run scored off the right-hander came in
the sixth on Hebner’s throwing error. Reliever Dave Giusti stopped
the Giants in order in the ninth.
Ken Henderson opened the Giants’ sixth with a single and scored
when Hebner threw wildly past first on Tito Fuentes’ sacrifice bunt.
The Pirates’ first run came in the second inning on a homer by Bob
Robertson, who had blasted three in Pittsburgh’s 9-4 victory Sunday.
The Giants won the opener Saturday, 5-4.
