The Black Student Union (BSU) did not ask the ASUO Fiscal
Committee to “get people out of jail,” BSU spokesmen told the
Emerald Thursday.
A report in Thursday’s Emerald which said a proposed bail
project was eliminated because “it was felt by the committee that it
was not the duty of the ASUO to get people out of jail” was inaccurate,
the BSU spokesman said.
McGovern group gets underway
The formation of a Lane County "McGovern for President”
committee will be officially announced at a press conference at 10
a.m. Saturday in the Eugene Hotel. The committee’s chairmen, John
Stewart and Alice Walton, will outline the aims of the group.
Children’s art series begins
A special children’s community art series will begin Saturday
with the presentation of a children’s folk concert. The concert,
sponsored by the ASUO, will feature Larry Hanks and Jody Stecher,
folk musicians from the San Francisco Bay area.
The folk concert is the first of six children’s programs which will
be held on Saturdays during January and February.
Slavic languages conference starts
The Oregon chapter of the American Association of Teachers of
Slavic and East European Languages is sponsoring a conference at
the University Saturday.
Registration for the conference begins at noon in 101 EMU.
Featured in the conference will be Slavic music, discussions of
Russian literature, a symposium on Sergei Eizenstein, and a Slavic
dinner Registration fee is $1.
LA ensemble plays tonight
Thursday night marked the first in a weekend series of musical
events featuring the University Symphony Orchestra as the first part
of the 19th annual Conference on Music Education.
Each year since 1951, the music department has imported 500 to
700 music instructors. This year they come from several western
states, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Illinois and from Canada. These
instructors hold special clinics for the students, and hold band, or
chestra, choral, and elementary sessions.
The Los Angeles Brass Ensemble will be giving a concert at 8 p.m.
tonight, preceding other groups such as the University Singers and the
Eugene University Wind Ensemble. The conference will conclude
Saturday following a concert by the University of Oregon Symphony
Orchestra, beginning at 4 p.m. All concerts except the University
Singers, which will be given at the Grace Lutheran Church, will be at
the Recital Hall. Admission is free except for the Los Angeles Brass
Ensemble performance.
