Nobel Prize winner lectures today
The 1967 winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics
will lecture on “Science. Technology and Society”
at 8 p.m. tonight in the EML ballroom.
Hans Bethe, currently a professor of phvsics at
Cornell University, has been concerned with
relating the development of technology to the
development of society. Bethe has served on several
governmental advising bodies, including the
President’s Science Advisory Committee and the
team which negotiated the cessation of atmospheric
nuclear tests with the Soviet Union in Geneva,
Switzerland.
Bethe was one of the scientists who helped
develop the atomic bomb.
His main work, however, is concerned with the
theory of atomic nuclei. The Nobel Prize was
awarded him for his work on nuclear reactions,
which lead him to the discovery of the reactions
which supply the energy in the stars.
Hans Bethe
