Nature Party sweeps
Senate elections
By GARRETT NEAL
Of the Emerald
The Nature Party placed ten of its 11
candidates on the ASUO Senate in the
general elections last Thursday and
Friday.
The party, based on an ecology
platform, soundly beat its opponents, with
the only close races between Jerry
Jacques (independent) and George
D’Angelantonio (Nature Party), and Fred
Sawyer (independent) and Steve Abeling
(Nature Party).
Paul Grubbs, vying for Dorm Position
1, was the only Nature Party candidate
who failed to be elected. He was edged out
by Pat McMahon, a member of Students
United with Respect to Environment
(SURE).
Other SURE candidates, however, did
not fare as well. In only one other race did
a SURE party member win.
SURE, formed last week to combat the
Nature Party, found most of its opposition
from the Nature Party.
Less than ten per cent of the student
body took part in the elections with the
greatest balloting coming in the
Homecoming Queen selection.

Party interlopers win
Two ASUO Senate candidates had the
words “Nature Party” accompanying
their names on the final election ballot last
Thursday and Friday, but weren’t af
filiated with the party at the time.
And the two, Bruce Perry and Rolf
Hage, were among eight other Nature
Party candidates who won their elections.
Perry defeated Pearl Hill 599 to 445 for
Senator-at-Large position seven and Val
McIntyre was defeated by Hage 628 to 561
for Senator-at-Large position three.
In the primaries, held two weeks ago,
Perry’s and Hage’s names had no words
accompanying their names. Perry then
received 247 votes to Miss Hill’s 326 and
Hage got 372, as compared to Miss
McIntyre’s 624.
ASUO Vice-President Mike Kment
said Sunday, “According to the election
rules, anybody can put anything they want
after their names, if it’s under 12 words.”
He said putting a party affiliation on the
final ballot but not on the primary one was
“perfectly legal.”
Nature Party chairman George
U'Angelantonio said, “It’s legal, but it
