corporations, particularly the Gen

000 workers are currently striking
G.E. for increased wages and
fringe benefits.
At San Jose State College,
about 25 student members of the
Radical Action Movement (RAM)
a wing of SDS, clashed with 70
police who attempted to block
the students’ access to a room
in the College Union Building
where industrial recruiters were
stationed.

by a small force of plainclothes
men and campus guards and were
ordered to disperse.
When they did not, about 50
helmeted San Jose police joined
the other law enforcement per
sonnel in pushing the demonstra
tors out of the area. Fourteen
were arrested and charged with
misdemeanors under a recently
passed provision in state laws
prohibiting student disruption.
At Boston University, the G.E.
issue caused two outbreaks in as
many weeks. Twenty-four were
arrested when a group of protest
ers tried to disrupt a seminar at
tended by a G.E. executive. Stu
dents demanded that the univer
sity handle all medical and legal
problems resulting from the inci
dent, but the university refused to
do more than provide bail money
on a loan basis. It also refused
to comply with a demand that all
G.E. officials be banned from
campus.
Building occupied
Then approximately 50 mem
bers of SDS occupied the admin
istration building to protest the
school’s complicity with G.E.
They held the building for 16
hours despite a court injunction
against such action. Six were cit
ed for contempt of the court or
der.
At the University of Iowa, the
administration has announced it
will discipline students who at
tempted to remove U.S. Depart
ment of Labor recruiter from the
school’s placement office last
month. The students were pro
testing what they called the La
bor Department’s support of the
G.E. management against strik
ers. Civil charges will be brought
against non-students involved in
the incident.
