WEBFOOT SIGNAL-CALLER John Harrington gets hit just after
releasing a pass against UCLA last Saturday. The Portland senior,
who will probably start against OSU Saturday, completed 16 of
38 passes last week to earn "Back of the Game" honors.

Varsity vs. Frosh
It’s the varsity against the Frosh tonight at McArthur Court
as Oregon’s highly-rated basketball team makes its 1969-70
debut.
The appearance will be the Ducks only game action in Eugene
until Dec. 10, when they face Portland in their home opener.
Oregon opens Dec. 2 at Wichita State, then play at Florida
State Dec. 4 and New Mexico Dec. 6. The Frosh open their
season Dec. 2 at Clark College in Vancouver.
Admission to tonight’s 7:30 event is 50 cents for students
and $1 for adults. Ticket sales start at Mac Court at 6 p.m. The
event is sponsored by Oregon Club.
Only 20 minutes of Frosh-varsity action will actually be
played. The other 30 minutes of game action will be an intra
squad contest between the Green and Yellow units of Coach
Steve Belko’s team.
Belko has indicated that varsity starters will be forwards
Larry Holliday and Lenny Jackson, center Stan Love and guards
Billy Gaskins and Bill Drozdiak.
Probable Frosh starters are Chuck McCormick and Doug
Little at forwards, 6-10 A1 Carlson at center and Clyde Craw
ford and Dave Roberts at guards.
Lacrosse, bowling,
polo matches slated
Three Oregon club sports
teams have home matches slated
this weekend.

a 10 a.m. exhibition match Sat
urday on the football practice
field. Team lettermen are back
from last season’s 4-5 team, ac
cording to player-coach Rich Ken

“We’ll field a much better team
this year with plenty of depth,”
he noted.

Fighting Ducks meet OSU
in annual Civil War clash
By STAN HORTON
Emerald Sports Editor
This is the big one . . .
Oregon meets Oregon State Satur
day for the 73rd time before a sellout
crowd at Autzen Stadium.
But this annual “Civil War” classic has
taken on different meanings this season. It’s
more than just the “season-ender.”
For the Ducks there’s a chance for a win
ning season—the first since 1964 and the
first under Head Coach Jerry Frei.
For the Beavers a victory would mean six
consecutive wins over Oregon and a two
game lead in the overall series.
Who has the edge Saturday?
It’s hard to tell. Both teams are strong
defensively with the Ducks having the better
passing attack and OSU the better running
game.
Defense has been the ‘‘name of the game”
the past two Saturdays for the two Pacific-8
squads. Oregon State has held its last two
opponents, California and Washington State,
to a field goal apiece and has only allowed
about 14 points a game the entire season.
Oregon’s defense unit, anchored by Dennis
Gassner and Tom Graham, has been just as
good if not better. The Ducks limited high
scoring UCLA to only 13 points last week
end, which is quite a feat considering the
seventh-ranked Bruins had been averaging
38 a contest.
Passing has been the key to Oregon’s
offense this season as OSU should find out.
Webfoot “Super Soph” Bobby Moore and
teammate Bob Newland rank one-two in the
conference in pass receiving—Moore with 47
catches for 702 yards and ten touchdowns
and Newland with 41 for 542 yards and two
TDs.
On the other end of these pass catches,
most of the season, has been junior Tom
Blanchard, currently the second greatest
passer in Oregon history.
But the Grants Pass signal-caller is not
expected to start today because of a knee
injury suffered against Army. His place will
be taken by John Harrington, the capable
senior who earned “Back of the Game”
honors against UCLA.
Rushing has been a stronger point then
passing for Oregon State as OSU quarter
back Steve Endicott, also from Grants Pass,
has thrown 16 interceptions this season.
Three Beaver runners have over 300 yards
on the ground for the year. Hard-running
fullback Dave Schilling leads the pack with
520 yards on 142 carries. Billy Main, who
accumulated 634 yards as a junior, has 370
this year. Bryce Huddleston at halfback has
gained 313.
Oregon students do not need special tickets
for admission to the 1:30 p.m. contest. Ath
letic cards can be used as usual. Spouse
tickets can be purchased today at the ath
letic Department.
faces Southern Oregon College
in Leighton Pool. This will be the
Ducks’ final match of the sea
son.
They defeated SOC 9-3 early
in the season at Ashland and now
own a 4-5 season mark.
This afternoon at 4:15 p.m.
both the men’s and women’s bowl
ing squads meet Portland State on
the Brunswick Lanes in the EMU.
The men are 2-0 for the year
after taking wins from Oregon
State and Washington State last
week.
Ruggers schedule
Beavers Saturday
Immediately following Satur
day’s Oregon-OSU football game at
Autzen Stadium, the Duck rugby
team will play Oregon State.
The game will bring together
Ron Guy and Terry Logan, both
exciting ball runners who will
combine in the center positions
for the Ducks.
Clark Worth, who stood out
against Willamette University
last week, will be in the wing
three quarter position for Ore
gon.
NCAA meet draws
Webfoot harriers
Seven Oregon runners left to
day for Monday’s NCAA cross -
country championships in New
York City.
The Ducks, along with Villan
ova, Harvard and Florida, are one
of the team favorites in the event.
Freshman Steve Prefontaine
should be among the individual
leaders.
