NEW DELHI, India—Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was
expelled from the ruling Congress party Wednesday by Old
Guard leaders, a group that includes some of the closest
associates of her father, the late Jawaharlal Nehru.
The Old Guard—also called the Syndicate—accused her
of indiscipline, seeking to build a personality cult, setting
up rival groups in the party and causing the defeat of the
party’s nominee in the presidential elections last August.
