Bombings...
(Continued front page 1)
only to be met by the second.
No one was hurt.
At the bank, branch Mgr. El
mer Cone estimated the dam
ago to plate glass windows,
drapes, a fence and shrubbery
at $2,000-$3,000. Apparently,
five sticks of dynamite were
placed under the food fence at
the west end of the building,
police said. However, business
was conducted as usual Tues
day, according to Cone.
The blast at the Reg
ister-Guard occurred in an
alley on the east side of the
building, shattering six win -
dows at a cost estimated at
$200.
The Rev. H. Jenkins estimated
damages at the Methodist church
to be in excess of $3,000. Police
said several sticks of dynamite
were placed next to the south
entrance, damaging a cement
porch, hand-carved wooden
doors, glass windows on either
side of the doors and glass on
the other side of the entry way.
Normal services
Jenkins, the church’s pastor,
said services at the 1,500-mem
ber house of worship will con
tinue as usual.
The explosive used at Emer
ald Hall was placed under the
flooring of the wood-frame build
ing, causing an estimated $3,
500 structural damage, accord
ing to James Henshaw, direc
tor of the University physical
plant.
W. N. McLaughlin, the Uni
versity business manager, esti
mated damage to the contents
of the building at about $2,000.
He said three steel desks and
two tables were damaged but
repairable, two typewriter
stands, a chair and two type
writers were damaged beyond
repair, and a section of floor
needs repairing in the regis
trar’s section of the building.
Margaret Blago, associate reg
istrar, said the registrar’s office
will be closed today while em
ployees from the physical plant
are fixing the buckled floor.
The office should reopen on
Thursday, she said.
No warning
Capt. Smith said police had
no advance warning of the
bombing wave, other than the
fact that other buildings have
been bombed in the Eugene area
in the last nine months, amount
ing to over $110,000 damage.
On Sept. 29 a series of explo
sions and fires caused an esti
mated $106,000 damage to the
Eugene Naval & Marine Corps
Reserve Training Center in
west Eugene. Damaged were a
crane, four dump trucks and two
bulldozers.
On Nov. 4, an explosive set
under the University’s Air Force
ROTC headquarters in Cherney
Hall blew a hole in the first
oor and knocked out part of
a wall, causing $1,786 in dam
ages.
And last Thursday, a blast
apparently caused by two sticks
of dynamite ripped through the
rear portion of the Central Pres
byterian Church, 1475 Ferry St.
The cost was estimated at $3,
000.
No arrests have been made in
any of the explosions, and no
one has been injured.
