Group threatens
assault on cross

Butte Cross isn’t removed by
next Oct. 1, a Eugene group
says it will move or modify the
cross itself.
The threat was made by Chet
Taylor, a University English
instructor and spokesman for
the group calling itself the Eu
gene Activists Council.
Earlier this week Taylor was
fined $25 for taking a pickax to
the ground around the base of
the cross, which is located in
a city park atop the butte at the
north end of downtown Eu
gene.
The Activists Council wants
the cross down, Taylor said, be
cause the group feels a religi
ous symbol has no business
being on public property.
Legal efforts to remove it have
thus far failed. The State Su
preme Court has ruled that the
cross can stay, although the
high court has agreed to a re
hearing of the case.
If the cross isn’t down legally
by Oct. 1, Taylor said, the Ac
tivists Council is considering
several approaches for a new as
sault upon it. Among these, he
said, are "the use of drag lines
to pull it down, dynamite, jack
hammers, making it over into
another symbol, and painting it
pitch red.”
City officials had no comment.
