Peace Pilgrim dedicates life to walking

“About 31 years ago the world
considered me successful be
cause I had money and things,
but I looked at my own life and
found it empty.”
It was this realization which
15 years ago started Peace Pil
grim on her 25,000 mile walk
for peace throughout the United
States.
The fiery-eyed woman is walk
ing “without any visible means
of support,” to bring her mes
sage of love and peace to all the
people in the United States.
She depends upon her fellow
Americans for food and shelter,
owning only those things which
she carries with her.

like the name of a baseball team,
the white haired evangelist told
of her first serious encounter
with the idea of God.
“Because I had no religious
training as a child, I was pushed
into taking the ‘inner way.’ I
went out one night, took a walk
with my dog, pondered deeply
upon this question, ’what is God,’
went home and slept on it and
in the morning I had an answer.
"We human beings lump to
gether all of the things in the
universe which are beyond the
capacity of all of us collectively.
Some people call these things
nature, others call them God.’’
She also has an answer to a
lot of contemporary problems.
On the one hand she seems like
an impervious wall of goodness,
plugged in, as she says, only to
the cosmic universe and a high
er order of intelligence.
Yet at the same time, she sur
prises her listener with an amaz
ing amount of awareness of the
issues, if perhaps not their sig
nificance, in our present culture.

Ainsworth, conducted a spirit
ed exchange of letters during
the mid-1800’s which have been
re-printed by the University
Library.
The letters are published in
“The Ca41 Number," spring 1969
edition, a semi-annual publica
tion of the Library.
Among the topics which the
pair found in common were
economic conditions, railroad
schemes, politics and politi
cians.

Whereas all of the people in
the Black power movement
used to be integrationists, there
are now some segregationists.
Now to me segregation is in
valid ... we must sink or swim
together. It is invalid but it is
understandable.
Violence has already impaired
the civil rights movement.
Four years ago the civil rights
movement was doing very well
and there was no violence. Now
after riots and violence, there is
more race prejudice than there
was when I was born.
With the violence came fear
and what you fear you tend to
hate.
• Student rebellion: It is a
hopeful sign of spiritual awaken
ing. Now don’t think I condone
violence because I don't . . . vio
lence defeats its own purpose.
In speaking with students, I
can say that violence is an infi
nitesimal part of student rebel
lion. In general, it is a good re
bellion against false values of
society—war, materialsim, prej
udice.
