PALO ALTO, Calif. (Special)—A pair of fine
Ditching performances by Jon Wheeler and Rick
Mealev weren’t enough to halt Stanford here
Saturday as the Indians edged the Oregon Ducks
in a Pac-8 doubleheader, 2-1, and 3-0.
A day earlier in Berkeley, the California Bears
ripped 18 hits as Tom McAlone blanked Oregon
for a 9-0 victory. , ,
The Ducks, now 2 4 in conference play and 15 7
overall, move to Los Angeles, where they face
UCIA in a 12 noon doubleheader today and
Southern California in a single game Tuesday.
Head Coach Don K.rsch has indicated that he
will choose between Dave Anderson (2-0. 0.00).
Fred Massar (2 0. 3.50) and Jim Van Wyck (24),
3 80) for the two starting assignments today. 1’ieci
Cardwell (2-1. 2.33) will throw Tuesday.
WHEELER PITCHES THREE HITTER
Wheller, now 4-1, allowed Stanford only three
hits in the extra inning opener, which went one
inning over the scheduled seven before being de
cided by a bases-loaded squeeze bunt One of the
hits allowed by Wheeler was a fourth-inning
homer by Jack Hodges. , .
Walks—Wheeler issued eight—finally proved to
he the undoing for the senior right hander. All
American first baseman Mark Marquess led oil
the Stanford eighth with a base on balls. Wheelei
threw late to second on a sacrifice attempt b>
Hodges, then wild pitched the runners up a base
and intentionally walked pitcher Bob Boone, the
Indians’ regular third baseman. With an 0-2
count Chuck Williams delivered a perfect bunt
to the left of the pitchers mound as Marquess
raced home from third.
ARNOLD SCORES ON ERROR
Steve Arnold scored a totally unearned run for
Oregon’s only tally in the second. A fumble, wild
pitch, and two throwing errors moved him around
the sacks. _ . ._
Only two other times was Oregon in scoring
position—after Dick Whitman's fifth inning
double and Earle YVickiunas eigntn inning inpie.
Boone, a senior pitching this year for the first
time since high school, struck out eight and
walked no one while giving up four hits. The .319
hitter now has a 5-0 record and an 0.79 ERA.
The Ducks picked up six hits off 6-foot-7 Rod
Peteete in the second game of the doubleheader,
but fine control by the big hurler and excellent
Stanford defense made the difference in the 3-0
Indian victory.
Oregon’s Rick Mealey gave up only two earned
runs in seven and two-thirds innings, but his per
formance wasn’t good enough to stop the Indians.
Singles by Russ Tweet and Poteete and a triple
by catcher Bob Edie accounted for two Indian
runs in the second.
Those tallies were the difference until the
eighth stanza when, with two out. Tweet singled
through the hole to left. He moved all the way
around to score when first baseman Arnold let
Colby Howe’s throw' get away from him on a
ground ball by Les Kaufman. Dave Anderson
quelled the Stanford rally after another single.
WICKLUND, JOHNSON SINGLE
Oregon threatened twice. In the sixth, Wick
lund and Dave Johnson rapped consecutive
singles with two out, but Bob Main went down
swinging. In the eighth, the Ducks had two run
ners thrown out at third following a pair of Stan
ford errors and a single by Mealey.
Oregon made a last gasp in the ninth on a two
out pinch single by Ron Molony, now hitting .778,
but Poteete struck out Arnold to end the contest.
Poteete, like Boone, whiffed eight and walked
none, extending to 29 the number of consecutive
innings the Ducks have gone without receiving
a base on balls from opposing pitchers.
Oregon was robbed of four base hits on a pair
of fine fielding plays by Marquess plus gems by
Poteete and left-fielder Hodges.
In the loss to California, veteran McAlone
limited the Ducks to five hits while striking out
nine as his teammates pounded Oregon’s Card
well and Massar for 18 safeties. The Bears didn't
score against Cardwell, the ace of the Oregon staff
with a 1.14 ERA going in to the game, until the
fifth. Jim Corcoran singled and scored on a tre
mendous double by Bob Rebuschatis.
In the sixth, four consecutive two-out singles
brought home two more tallies. An inning later,
Don Wilcox tripled to left after Dave Hagan
singled off Howe’s chest and Dave Texdahl
walked. Wilcox scored on Irv Baker’s squeeze
bunt.
Massar yielded three more runs in the eighth.
Four singles, an Oregon error and two wild
pitches were the difference.
Most: serious Duck threat was in the seventh,
when Garry Nall scampered to third on a two-out
single by Van W.vck and was thrown out trying
to score after the ball escaped the grip of center
fielder Texdahl.

Washington wins three crew races
Washington swept all three races to dominate a five-way crew
meet Saturday at Dexter Reservoir.
The Huskies finished first in the varsity race with a 7:20.4
clocking. Stanford was second followed by Oregon State and
Pacific Lutheran.
Oregon’s shell did not finish the race because seventh man
Gene Brown fell out of the boat fifty yards from the end.
The Washington Frosh turned in the best time of the day by
taking the freshmen race in 6:46.5. Oregon was fourth in 7:25.5.
