History prof retires

Students will get their last
chance next term to learn U.S.
History from Wendell Stephen
son, history professor at the
University. After 15 years of
teaching here, Stephenson will
be retiring in June.
Most students know him as
the white-haired professor who
waits for the 5 p.m. bus in front
of 150 Science.
Stephenson, who is 70 years
old today, has been at home re
cuperating from a fall he had
in November. However, he will
be teaching a colloquium at his
home from 7:30 to 10.30 Wed
nesday night during spring term.
The colloquium will focus on
the Civil War, which is Stephen
son’s specialty. According to the
history department, the class
will be open to 12 interested
students. It will not be limited
to history students.
Stephenson said students
should be given the opportunity
to learn and think in class. Stu
dents in his colloquium will be
given a book to read each week.
Court sets trial date
for Gwyther, Morgan
The cases of David Gwyther
and Kip Morgan will be heard
March 24 in Portland’s U.S. Dis
trict Court.
Both Gwyther and Morgan
face three charges that could
result in a 15 year maximum
jail sentence. Both pleaded not
guilty at the arraignment held
in Portland Feb. 26.
Charges include disrupting of
ficial actions of Selective Serv
ice System personnel in Rose
burg and Eugene, Jan. 8 and
16, and also being part of a
conspiracy to effect the objects
of the Selective Service System.

let the students do most of the
talking,” he added.
He said there should be more
small classes where students are
not tied down by research pa
pers and lectures.
Stephenson is regarded as
foremost in the field of South
ern history. He has taught and
lectured in 15 different univer
sities in England, France, India
and the U.S.
He has founded and edited
several journals on Southern
history and has authored sev
eral books.
