Duck tracksters
open season

Oregon’s 1968 outdoor track
and field season gets under way
next week - end. Saturday,
March 22, when the Webfoots
host a dual meet with Fresno
State College at 1:30 p.m. on
Hayward Field. This will be the
fifth meeting of the two schools
with Oregon having won the
four previous meets.
Fresno State opened its sea
son last week in a three - way
meet with Stanford and Occi
dental. Stanford won with 90
points, Occidental had 62, and
Fresno State was last with 29
points. The Bulldogs have sev
eral good performers who prom
ise to put on a fine show: Fin
nish Olympic star Iakki Musta
kari has a life time best in the
pole vault of 17-1, triple jumper
Irvin Hunt jumped 49 feet last
week and Kenneth Svenson has
thrown the discus 177-2.
The meet will be a proving
ground for many of the Ducks,
and should provide some good
indications of this year’s
strengths and weaknesses. Ore
gon Coach Bill Bowerman has
indicated that the distance races
should be our best events,
“. . . we don’t have the balance
that we would like ... to field
a good team you need four good
sprinters and the same for the
quarter in order to win the re
lays, the key to many meets.”
Knoke returns
The Ducks have many fine ath
letes returning from last year,
including three Olympians. Gary
Knoke, “a world class hurdler,”
according to Bowerman, who
competed for Australia in both
the Mexico City and Tokyo
Olympic Games. Arne Kvalheim
competed in the 1500 meters for

The sprints are perhaps the
weakest events for the Ducks as
three-year letterman Mike Dei

the only returnee with a best
of 9.6 in the 100. Football play
ers Greg Lindsey and Jim Frank
lin will also compete.
Junior Ron Couser returns in
the 440 with a best of 47.5. Jim
Reverman will carry the Web
foot hopes in the 880 (1:48.8).
Ray Hammitt and Steve Savage
are also expected to compete in
the half mile.
The mile is unquestionably
the Ducks' best event with two
sub-four minute men and sev
eral more real close: Kvalheim
(3:58.5), Roscoe Divine (3:57.2),
Terry Dooley (4.02.2), Tom Mor
row (4:03.0), and Mike Lyons
(4:07.1).
The two- and three-mile events
will also be very good for Ore
gon this year: Morrow (8:49.8),
Kvalheim (with school records
of 8:33.2) in the two- and 13:19.1
in the three-mile. Trerise
(8:51.3), and John Woodward
(8:58.5) will provide great
depth in the long distances. Jim
Gorman could turn into a strong
steeple chase threat this year, as
he just started running the event
last year and turned in a fine
8:53.1 to place first against USC.
Johnson joins Knoke
Myron Johnson will join
Knoke to provide fine competi
tion in the high and intermedi
ate hurdles.
The field events won’t produce
spectacular results, but the
Webfoots do have several fine
performers. Long jumper Tom
Smith has a lifetime best of
24-8, and Warren Chen Shui
(from Jamaica) has gone 47-8%
in the triple jump. Sophomore
Jim McMillan has pole vaulted
16 feet and promises to go even
higher.
In the weight events Zig
Strauts with bests of 54-7 in the
shot, anw 174-3 in the discus
will carry most of the load.
Jim Sagle, who also competes
in the shot, will return in the
javelin with a 223-1 best effort.
After the Fresno State meet
the Ducks will go on the road
to meet Sacramento State on
March' 29. They will open their
PAC season at home on April
5 against Washington.
