    Petition drive set
for army mutineers
Sentencing ot three soldiers
at the Presidio in San Fran
cisco last week brought Rich
Fredericks, a senior at the Uni
versity, to head a petition drive
Thursday to voice disapproval
of the sentences.
The three soldiers were sen
tenced to 14, 15 and 16 years
at hard labor after being con
victed for mutiny. The three,
along with 24 prison inmates,
conducted a sit-down strike aft
er a fellow inmate was shot
while allegedly trying to escape.
The other 24 prisoners will
stand trial soon for their ac
tions, Fredericks said.
Fredericks said that he will
send the petitions along with
enclosed letters to U.S. Senators
Mark Hatfield, McGovern, and
Kennedy, and probably to the
commander in charge of the
general court martials at the
Presidio.
The petition drive is a indi
vidual effort and not sponsored

and on to the Pioneer Cemetery
where they will "bury fear and
suspicion,” said a spokesman
for the PFM.
“All friends,” the spokesman
said, “will join hands and exer
cise the evil spirits.” This will
occur in front of the ROTC
buildings.
In a press conference Wed
nesday, ASUO President Dick
Jones invited members of the
community to join the sched
uled activities today at the Uni
versity.
Most of the problems to be
reflected upon—the war, draft,
poverty, and racism—are rele
vant to the entire community
and not just the college stu
dents, Jones explained.
“This is a time when students
and citizens can work together
as a community,” Jones said.
Jones stressed that the day
was not to be a strike or a
class boycott, but rather a day
in which each individual could
join in the scheduled dialogues
and spend some time examining
himself.
The Associated Press report
ed that some high schools in
Detroit will observe the fourth
anniversary of the death of Mal
colm X.
Groups in the area advocate
the establishment of a holiday
and have encouraged absentee
ism to dramatize the request.

He did not know if other cam
puses were conducting similar
drives or not.
The petition not only ex
presses concern over the sen
tences received by the three
soldiers, but also for the 24
other soldiers who participated
in the sit-down strike and are
now awaiting trial.
The petition demands a “full
investigation into the conditions
that precipitated the mass pro
test by 27 soldiers.”
"I think a full scale investi
gation into the conditions that
would cause 27 soldiers to pro
test is extremely necessary,”
declared Fredericks. “People
just don’t protest unless they
have a damn good reason.”
Fredericks said that he orig
inally set a goal of 1.000 stu
dent signatures and 300 faculty
signatures, but these figures
would be revised as interest
grows.
Fredericks said he would
have a table today in the EMU.
