When a University forces students to make
decisions affecting, at the very least, three
month's work while standing in a registration
line, when it proposes to prepare them for an
active role in society while restraining them to
a passive role in the educational environment,
. when it requires a proper answer rather than
/ searching for a correct answer, when it pretends
to evaluate students on a scale which can only
be described as arbitrary, when it substitutes
structures and strictures for an exchange of
ideas . . . then it fails.
When a university graduates students unable
to cope with social responsibilities, who hate
“niggers” or just have their doubts about the
“colored,” who are still hung up in the nine
teenth century concepts of “manifest destiny”
and the “white man’s burden,” who can’t differ
entiate between intelligence and educational op
portunity, who can’t form an opinion about the
Vietnam War or a school bond proposal and
whose only goal is to settle down with-a com-r(,
fortable income and insulate themselves from,*
the “unpleasantness” of the world . . . then it
fails. jj.
Future Foci:
This Focus said, more or less, "Some
thing ought to be done about that."
Future Foci will reach further into in
novative education to find out what is
now being done at the University and
around the country. Focus will look into
what is or is not being done by:
• SEARCH courses, past and present,
exploring education
• ISCOHE, Inter - Institutional Student
Committee on Higher Education
• Chancellor's Teaching Research
• Departmental and individual research
and proposals for new educational
structures
