Web foots Rolling,
Says Harrington
By STAN HORTON
Of the Emerald
‘‘We’re really starting to roll.
We’re gonna be 3-3 by the time
we meet USC.” Quarterback
John Harrington echoed the
sentiments of the entire Oregon
football squad after their 23-8
victory over Idaho.
The win over the Vandals
gave the Ducks a 2-3 season
record with a good chance to
reach .500 against Utah next
Saturday.
Harrington completed 5 of 16
passes for 65 yards and one
touchdown. He also picked up
63 yards on the ground. The
5-11 junior from Portland em
phasized the fact that he had
great protection from Oregon’s
offensive front line. Harrington
was thrown for only one loss
in 15 carries.
"Back-of the-g a m e” Claxton
Welch, who gained 139 yards in
28 carries, termed the blocking
"out of sight.” Welch’s 139 yards
gave him 1012 for his career
and put him eighth on the all
time Oregon rushing list.
Head Coach Jerry Frei seem
ed to be pleased with his team’s
overall performance but was un
happy with several first half
penalties which halted Oregon
goal line drives. "It’s nice to see
all those smiling faces two
weeks in a row . . . Those penal
ties in the first half really hurt
us . . . but I’m not complaining.”
Frei also commented on the
Duck letdown in the second
half. "I wanted to give a lot of
guys a chance to play. It took
away some of our momentum.
We substituted when we did be
cause John (Harrington) had
been hit in the chest and it was
a good time to rest him, and
we wanted to get a lot of guys
into the game.”

The head mentor also had
praise for Idaho. “Hey, I want
you to point out that Idaho is
a darn good football team. See
what Washington State did to
Stanford? (21-21 tie) Well, Ida
ho lost to WSU 14-7, and that
says a lot right there.”
Idaho coach Y C McNease of
fered similar comments con
cerning Oregon. “Oregon is an
extremely aggressive team . . .
Oregon did a heck of a job on
our running attack. Oregon is
probably the best football team
we’ve played this year.”
McNease, the Oregon football
squad and Coach Jerry Frei
seem to agree that the Fighting
Ducks are indeed on their way.
