Stage One By LEE O’CONNOR Of the Emerald Mona Sturges bubbles. So does her store. It is unique, like its own er, in that it has “a mood for every occasion,” no matter if you feel up, down, sad, mad or scholarly. Mrs. Sturges can’t be put in to a mold. She just' doesn’t fit iato one of the “little boxes that are just the same.” Her store doesn’t qualify as one of the sterile look-alike downtown store emphasizing the Bobbie Brooks label either. To summarize, Stage I, which is located on 11th and Hilyard, by the Mayflower Theatre, comes across loudly, and with a vivaci ous personality that asks, Do you dare to be you? “I probably know more about the Sigma Nu’s than anyone else on campus,” Mrs. Sturges said. She watches people a lot. “It makes me mad,” she said, to be classified, so she doesn’t do it to other people. Her store reflects it. Store Offers V'ariety "We’re not trying to compete with downtown,” Mrs. Sturges said. “Fashion is fun and our store is for people who want to express themselves. It is for those people who have enough confidence to wear what they want,” she pointed out. Stage I does this quite suc cessfully. It’s not the place where you go to get your basic black dress. However, unless the other fashion stores have caught onto the idea, you can count on getting something there that sets you apart from 5,000 other Betty Co-eds on campus. Big Bikinis What does Stage I have ex actly? That depends a lot on what you want. Clothes-wise, Stage I, like about every other clothes store in town, features clothes ranging from the sporty to prom wear. Bikinis are still big this year. Shorts and cotton and knit slacks in bright yel lows, pinks and blues are shown on the racks. The so-called Ro mantic look, with its full skirts and yards of ruffles on the sleeves, the hemline, the neck line and down the front can be seen in both the maxi and the mini dress lengths. The Bon nie and Clyde look is also shown, for examples of the kind of clothing you’re likely to find. Perhaps Stage I differs most from other Eugene stores in the accessories that it offers. Broadway Kitty Corner from the Eugene Hotel conversation piece by the way. and stacks of tights in all col ors, and in basic black and white, are shown in the store. There is hand-made jewelry. Stage I is the designer’s only Oregon outlet. The rest of his merchanise he sells in Califor nia. Of course, there are also the over-the-knee boots, and all sorts of leather purses. To make the merchandise more varied, there are also suntan lotions and creams. One of the nicest things about Stage I is that the store, its owner, and its customers take life kind of easy. There isn’t any big rush about anything. No pressure is given. You can come in and look without buy ing. If you're not in a rush, and just stopping in for only a moment, you might even take the time to have a cigarette and talk to Mrs. Sturges. You will probably like her, most people do. Maybe you’ll find something just a little bit different on the racks that says You. That is, if you dare to be different. Men's Styles Steal Show While Diahnn Carroll topped oil' her evening gown with nearly nothing, the male sex dominated the fashion scene of Wednesday’s 40th Annual Aca demy Awards. "Oscar’’ nearly went unnotic ed as Hollywood’s males ran to the stage in turtleneck sweaters without ties, turtleneck sweat ers with beads, Mao suits, long hair, and an abundance of beards. It took Sammy Davis, Jr., singing the Academy Award winning song "Talk to the Ani mals,” to steal the show. Danc ing across stage in his Guru Suit with a string of beads around his neck, and spiced with a beard, Sammy “socked it” to an otherwise dull eve ning.
