Greek Future Religion Based

Happening can happen." Though this definition may not be terribly
precise it does give one a rather contemporary description
And it serves as an entry point for me to begin a discussion
of the common Its mg in the Greek system and Christian idealism
Very often a person coming onto this campus for the first tune
finds himself reacting to the University and the fraternity-sorority
system with a sense of wonder This was certainly my reaction
coming from several years of experience working at the Berkeley
campus of the University of California
The relationship between the Greek system and the University
is under the same stress now that the Berkeley situation faced
several years ago There is a very definite simplicity, a lack of
sophistication on this campus and it is precisely this characteristic
that has enabled Oregon to maintain its unique personality
Reacting to this simplicity is by no means a criticism but rather
should serve as a sign of hope for both the University and the
Greek system The Lack of sophistication coupled with a renewed
sense of community will enable Oregon to continue building its
spirit and developing its personality in spite of a regular growth
pattern.
If we are all careful about how we grow and develop we can
remain a kind of spirited family even as we become a large uni
versity.
One suspects that the sophistication level will gradually be
modified as we welcome a new kind of student into the University
environment. One would hope, however, that the sense of com
raumty will continue to evolve and be strengthened and not
smothered by an influx of buildings and population __
Preserving a lack of sophistication will be difficult, perhaps
impossible Maintaining a strong sense of community will be not
only possible but necessary if we want to survive the present
upheaval on campuses throughout the country.
If a community is a place where a Happening can happen and
if Oregon is a true community the question becomes: How can
we preserve this situation" We might begin by trying to discover
a little more precisely what we want in the w>ay of common Irv
ing and how we can go about setting it
At this point I think that our discussion can become particular
and pointed. This University is a community and. as far as I can
observe, it is founded on at least some of these principles and
traditions , , ,
If this spirit is to be maintained it can be done only if the
University itself is founded on and rooted in a number of small
communities who are conscious of the needs of the University
and who both respect and lose its memberJup Without this the
members of this University can do little more than work as in
dividuals in relative isolation toward very personal goais
Here rests a fundamental problem for our campus living groups
—most particularly the fraternity-sorority system For the most
part they have been founded within a Christian context The
ceremony and ritual, the traditions, customs and mottos have
deep roots in a number of orthodox Christian celebrations They
are established, as one can easily learn from Greek literature and
Rush guides to further the development of the individual as he
relates to his university and world systems
If the** living groups are to remain a viable part of the Uoiver
srtv life then they must, as groups and as individuals, review their
purposes and goals They must actually direct their attention to
the genuine betterment of the local situation provide the mem
bership with authentic opportunities to grow as distinct personal!
ties and then contribute to the University the benefit of his grow
th and development
Outside pressure which inhibits each local community in its
efforts to reach intelligent maturity must be diminished and
gradually eliminated
Internal prejudice ha* no place in any community which has
Christian root* When this exists it must be the goal of the mem
bership to transform it into understanding and tolerance Ami
if any such society insists that the individual be submerged into
a stereotype it ought not have a place here or on any other cam
pus.
In spite of the problems that Greek living may bring to one's
attention, they are, in my estimation, potentially the most effec
live means that the University has to maintain a spirit and sens
of true community on this campus. They offer the student an
excellent opportunity to accept responsibility and to grow patient
with different ideas and backgrounds. And to the University they
offer a great resource of talent, enthusiasm and dedication
The solution can be reduced to rea! simplicity. The lack of
sophistication which insures honesty, directness and community
can be maintained here if the Greek system especially will ques
tion its purposes and goals and commit itself to genuinely main
taining here a place where a Happening can happen "
