Unique Wedding
Gifts Suggested
Each year the potential bride
is deluged with the typical wed
ding presents: crystal, china, lin
en, and utilitarian items. However,
occasionally she receives that gift
that stands out from the others
—the distinct gift.
"People Lovers” have been sold
at the Hallmark novelty shop.
These are brightly painted cera
mic bells shaped as kittens and
angels. What are they used for?
To hang in trees! An assortment
of wrapping paper with matching
ribbons and cards was also pur
chased for a bridal gift at the
Hallmark shop.
Elaine's gift shop sells an an
niversary candle. These have the
bride and bridegroom’s name in
gold carbon with lines designating
how far the candle should be
burned on each anniversary.
Also coming into vogue is an
assortment of foods to start off
a newlywed pair. Most popular
are spice cabinets and jam as
sortments. Myrtlewood bowls and
other utensils are also popular
gifts primarily because of their
rarity outside of Oregon.
The Bon Marche Bussells has
photoplates available for nuptial
gifts. Wedding pictures and in
vitations are engraved on dinner
plates. The silver and china de
partment frequently re-silvers
antiques bought in by customers
for gifts. Mrs. Chapman, head of
this department at the Bon
Marche says the most individual
gift request was a Grand Baroque
team set gold plated especially
for a wedding.
ADJUSTING HIS tie, Ron Cline has the same problems
most men do—maybe he needs a little feminine inftnenee.
He will have no trouble getting it with this formal attire
at the Junior Prom.

Ring History
Selecting a ring is one of the
first steps for an engaged couple.
A diamond is the most common
betrothal gem and has been ac
cepted as such since the 15th
century.
The word “diamond” is from
the Greek "adamas” which means
unconquerable.
The Egyptians were the first
to actually use a ring in the wed
ding ceremony. This was preced
ed by an ancient Jewish ceremony
in which a symbolic ring, too
large to be worn on the finger,
was given to the bride.
The circular shape of the ring
is said to be a carry-over from
fetters and bracelets worn by
slave women in primitive times.
The theme of submission is also
carried out by wearing the ring
on the left hand, the traditional
symbol of subjection. This cus
tom has been followed by English
speaking peoples since the 16th
century.
An ancient belief decrees that
a “vein of love” run directly from
the fourth finger to the heart.
Hence, the wedding ring is worn
on that finger, closest to the
heart, with the engagement ring
on the outside.
