What promised to be a good,
tight basketball game between
the Oregon Ducks and the Idaho
State Bengals turned into a bun
dle of surprises as the Ducks dc
fanged the Bengals 107-68 Wed
nesday night.
The 107 points was a record
breaking performance by Steve
Belko's Ducks, b it they got lots
of help from the Idaho State Ben
gals and its coaching staff.
ISC coach Claude Retherford—
a spiffv dresser if ever there was
one—got into it with referee Burt
Burr over a goal-tending call and
the result was that Burr called a
technical.
As Oregon captain Nick Jones
stood waiting to shoot the free
throw, Retherford had a few more
comments to make and Jones got
another free shot.
Gives "Salaams"
Not satisfied. Retherford gave
Burr several big "Salaams” and
earned a one-way ticket from the
court.
Jones sank both free throws,
the Ducks had a 64-50 lead and
the next two minutes of play did
the Bengals in.
Jones canned another free
throw, John Pinkstaff hit on a
lay-in and Bill Thomas dropped
in three quick baskets to run
the count to 75-54 for the Ducks

Oregon’s freshman wrestling
team demonstrated why they are
so highly touted Wednesday when
they defeated Treasure Valley
Community College 41-6 in McAr
thur Court. The Ducklings, who
have seven state champions on
the squad, collected seven pins
and two decisions in trouncing
the' Chuckers.

es, Oregon’s .John Miller, a two
time state champ, scored a sur
prisingly high 19-2 decision at 118
pounds over Ralph Carter, also a
two-time state titlist.
Miller, who got an early take
down and then never let up, was
praised by his coach Jim Bryan,
as “an exceptional wrestler and
a real leader.”
Bryan, was, in fact, quick to
hand out praise to the entire
squad. “This is the most out
standing frosh team on the en
tire Pacific Coast,” he said.
In the other featured match
Oregon’s Kip Gorton lost a 44)
168-pound decision to TV’s Junior
Johnson, a three-time state cham
pion, who has lost only one match
in five years of wrestling.
It was the second time the
two had met and each felt that
things had changed since the
first time.
“I feel like I’ve improved more
than he has,” Gorton said after
ward.
Bryan had the same feeling
and thought Gorton might have
won. “He was a little too con
servative,” he said. “If he’d have
been shootin’ more it might have
been different.”
“He’s gotten a little smarter
and a lot stronger,” Johnson not
ed, but he was more concerned
with his condition and that of
the team.
John had played football un
der his wrestling coach Larry
Stevens and the TV team has had
only two workouts. Oregon has
been working out since school be
gan.
In other matches Oregon’s Greg
Morgan, 126 pounds; Rick Mail
loux, 133 pounds; Brent Merill,
140 pounds, Randy Mills, 148
pounds; George McNair, 170
pounds; Dana Roberts, 194 pounds;
and Tim Wilmarth, unlimited, all
won by fall.
Ed Dunne scored a 19-3 deci
sion in the 180-pound class and
Scott Phillips dropped a 20-2 de
cision at 155 pounds.
