Driving Care Urged
During the Holidays
One of every four members of the University commu
nity may not return to the campus next term. Where will
they be? They will be fighting for survival in a hospital
ward if they’re lucky, and if they’re not they will be lying
on the cold top of an autopsy table in a morgue.
A grim picture? Not in the spirit of the holidays? You’re
right but the National Safety Council predicts that one
of every four adults will be killed or critically injured in a
traffiic accident within his lifetime and the council cites
the upcoming holiday season as the most deadly time on
our nation’s highways.
Predictions of the Safety Council are usually accurate.
As the time approaches for student, faculty, and staff
members to return home for the holidays thoughts turn
toward reunions with families and friends, parties, and a
generally carefree break in the routine of university life.
But thoughts should also turn toward your driving habits.
The pictures on this page were taken during the Christ
mas holiday in 1985. The driver at the left had too much
to drink e left two sons and a widow behind when he
was killed on Christmas Eve.
The young man lying in front of his car below was
hurrying home to visit his family. His car missed a curve
at high speed. He finished his journey home in a coffin.
