IF ALABAMA'S PAUL (Bear) Bryant would stop crying
tong enough, he might conclude that discrimination does
not exist on his campus. . .
. . . discrimination, that is, which is directed toward the Bear.
But you can't convince Coach Bryant of that.
“Why aren't we number one?" is his typical refrain these days.
“We were the national collegiate football champions last year and
the year before; we're undefeated this year.
“We were picked to win all our games, and we won all our games.
What more can you expect? If the voters want something besides
winning, we'll try triple reverses, forward laterals, lateral forwards,
dipsy-doodle, or even run a quarterback sneak on a third-and
nine. . .”
And on Bryant goes . . . mentioning anything and everything
except Notre Dame and Michigan State.
Okay, Bear. We'll forget about the Irish and the Spartans for
a while, too. We'll look at YOUR accomplishments.
Last Saturday, you won the Southeastern Conference’s unofficial
small college championship by beating Southern Mississippi 34-0.
That made you 2-0 in that league, your team having beaten
Louisiana Tech a month earlier.
Very good. And you’ve beaten seven “major” colleges, too—
Tulane, Mississippi State . . . —whose combined season’s record is a
heart-stopping 34 wins and 41 losses.
Now. about Michigan State and Notre Dame. . .
About the time you were blanking Louisiana Tech 33-0. the Spar
tans were humbling Rose Bowl favorite Purdue 41-20. And last week
w hen you were rolling over Southern Miss, Notre Dame was humiliat
ing Purdue's Rose Bowl opponent—Southern Cal—51-0.
Notre Dame’s other opponents were hardly of the Southern Missis
sippi caliber, either. Playing the best of the Big 10 and the West
Coast, they won more than 55 per cent of their games. And if teams
such as Indiana and Wisconsin—both tougher than a number of
teams Bama has played—could be subtracted from Notre Dame’s
schedule as small colleges the way Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech
were from Alabama’s, the ND opponent figure would stand at about
65 per cent wins.
Michigan State isn’t much different.
Coach Bryant should realize that the udn-loss record alone doesn’t
qualify anyone for a national title.
The era of the “sit back and watch everyone else knock each
other off" method of winning a championship is still not at hand.
SOME FOLKS SAID it was last year when Alabama won
the championship by playing much the same regular season
schedule as this year, and then ascending to the top when
top-ranked Michigan State and second-ranked Arkansas
were upset in the post-season Bowls.
But the ’Banians did a creditable job in a bowl game themselves—
heating Nebarska 38-25 in the Miami (Fla.) Orange Bowl Classic.
That—not the others' losses—did the trick.

year, posting a 20-5 record of the
season. However, this year the
concentrate on containing any one j

Without any one outstanding
performer the Oregonians will
rely on a balanced attack to carry
them through the season. Offen

hitting him with a pass for an
