Pete Pifer and Brothers, along with accomplice
Bobby Grim, ran. passed, and pushed a slippery
pigskin all over the rain-soaked field, always out
muscleing the Ducks at the critical moments.
Pifer set a new PAC record with his second
consecutive 1.000 yard seasonal rushing output.
He is the only athlete to make this vaunted mark
twice in a varsity career.
Pete’s total of 130 yards for the game gave him
a season's mark of 1.088 yards to go with last
full's total of 1.095.
However. Pistol Pete had a lot of company on
the ground as he. Brothers and Grim accounted
for 298 yards of the 305 yards totaled by the
Beavers.
And had it not been for a last second 101-yard
return of a fumble by Jimmy Smith with an
assist from Harry Cartales who grabbed the loose
ball in the end zone, ran to the five and lateraled
to Smith, the Ducks would have been even more
humiliated.
The Beavers received the opening kick-off. The
Ducks held on downs, but Oregon was also un
successful in three running plays and punted to
OSU on the Duck 40.
After the punt it took the Beavers only eight
plays to get their initial tally, a 29-yard field goal
by Mike Haggard.
Pifer carried twice to start the drive, putting
the ball on the Duck 24 with two smashes over
the left side of the Oregon defensive line.
Bob Grim carried for four more up the middle.
Brothers then kept for three before Belcher
tried to go wide and was stopped for a three
y if a toss.
Following an incomplete pass intended for
Roger Cantlon. the OSU left end. Brothers went
for eight on a third and 13 play. With the ball
on the Oregon 12 and fourth down. Haggard was

The Ducks took the kick-off and started to
move the football with quarterback Barnes get
ting two over left tackle, Scott Cress blasting
through a hole at right tackle, swinging outside
and then going for 22 yards to the Beaver 38.
However, two plays later tackle Ron Boley of
the Beavers hit Barnes who had no one to throw
to for an 11-yard loss and then Barnes threw in
complete on third down forcing the Ducks to
punt again.
Then the Ducks got burned on the "Duck Spe
cial" a play put in by Dee Andros, the OSU coach,
‘'especially for this game."
With the count third-and-three at the 50, Grim
took the reverse handoff from Belcher and swept
wide left, hurdling Ducks in his path, to get 18
yards and a first down on the Oregon 32.
Brothers then found Grim wide open for a nine
yard pitch to the 23. which preceded a two yard
smash by Dummers.
Pifer carried to the 17 for a four-yard gain
before taking the handoff on the next play and
crashing, twisting, and churning his way into the
Duck end zone for the score.
Haggard’s .point after was good and the Beavers
hdd a 10-0 margin.

fumbled and Dennis Rozario recovered for the
Beavers at the Duck 14.
Pifer got six to the Duck eight and OSU called
time, with 3:50 to go in the half.
Pifer's next attempt was thwarted as he fum
bled right back to the Ducks at the five with
Harry Cartales getting the loose ball.

was unable to get the first down at the 11. Sover
eign's punt went to the Oregon 37, where Waletich
called for the fair catch, missed and Cress re

from the 26 for a 36-yard field goal with just :29
seconds remaining. And at the half the Ducks
were down 13-0
