Cas.Staff Take Blame forWSU Loss
— r
‘‘I guess I picked the wrong weekend
to get sick." quipped Oregon head coach
Len Casanova at Monday’s Oregon Club
luncheon.
Cas was referring to both the Oregon
loss to Washington State University Sat
urday, and the flu which he had that
kept him from the luncheon the previous
week after the Ducks had dumped Idaho,
287.
Cas, along with scout Bruce Snyder,
gave reports of the Saturday disaster at
the meeting.
‘ All the trouble started when Steve
Jones gained too many yards,” Cas said.
"We blew one; w'e just waited too long
on our decision."
COUNTING FAILS
Jones had just gone nine yards up the
middle to the WSU two with less than a
minute to go. when the Ducks’ luck and
counting faltered.
Cas noted that he thought the Ducks
had a first down and that’s why they went
for the touchdown after throwing out
of bounds to stop the clock. They then
went for the TD. thinking they had two
downs before going for the field goal,
if they didn't get into the end zone.
"We had two chances in there, and
you’re never 100 per cent sure the field
goal is going to be good.” added Cas. “We
as coaches blew it for not getting them
(Trovato and Cunningham for a field
goal try) in there sooner."
Cas told his kids after the ball game
that they didn’t lose it in the final min
utes even though they had a last chance
for victory.
He was very proud of his team's sec
ond half comeback after making some
minor adjustments at intermission. "They
hit hard and played well." Cas added.
CRESS MAKES CATCH
“Scott Cress made two real spectacular
catches and Barnes made a fine grab on
Trovato's toss, too,” Cas pointed out. He
rated Bunker right up there too and
noted that “some of the greatest catches
I’ve ever seen were made out there
Saturday.”
Cas had plaudits for Barnes, his sopho
more quarterback. “Barnes got us out of
trouble time and time again. He played
a real fine ball game in there," Cas said.
“All in all I’m real proud of the way
the kids came back to play real good
ball; you can really get down out there
when you’re behind by 14 points, but they
fought back like men,” the Duck skipper
finished.
Bruce Snyder went to Tempe, Arizona
last weekend to scout the Arizona State
Utah game and reported that Tempe is
“a much better place to scout than
Boise." He was referring to the deplor
able weather conditions in Idaho com
pared to the balmy 80 degree tempera
tures he found in Arizona.
“We will face a team with a lot of
talent, good talent as everyone says, but
they’re not a team yet,” the sleuth said
The Wildcats under coach Frank Kush
are 2-5 on the year, including last week’s
21-7 loss to Utah,
"They have one big problem—that’s
the quarterback," Snyder said. The Wild
cats have two quarterbacks in John Good
man and Rick Shaw. Snyder mentioned
that a lot of Arizona State fans and stu
dents have pushed for Shaw to handle
the number one position.
QUARTERBACK DUAL
Goodman was the nation’s second lead
ing passer in avoiding interceptions last
fall. He threw only four. However, he
has thrown 13 so far this year, including
three against Utah.
Shaw is the rookie who has good run
ning ability and may be the starter. "We
don’t know which one will start against
us,” Snyder added.
The Duck private eye also singled out
Fair Hooker, Ken Dyer, Dewy Forrester,
and Travis Williams as outstanding Sun
Devils.
Hooker is a 6 3, 190 pound sophomore
end who has 20 receptions for the year.
He is also fast and agile at his split end
position.
Dyer at 6-5, 1BH pounds is not a big
strapping end but can catch well and has
good moves. Forrester is the tight end
and rates as a strong blocker and tough
competitor.
Williams is a California JC transfer
with good speed once he gets into the
clear or around the corners, according to
Snyder's report.
A8U DISAPPOINTED
‘‘They are really disappointed in their
offense, that is their big problem. They
don't have a leader; they must solve the
quarterback situation," Snyder added
On defense, Snyder feels the Sun
Devils are big and fast He reports that
all five of the front wall are lettermen.
The noseman was supposed to be an
All-American candidate but has been
"lazy” at times. "When he wants to move
someone he'll do it. I am sure no one
can move him when he doesn't want to
be moved,” Snyder said
The halfbacks are rated just average
They are good on pass coverage but not
too strong tackling The linebackers are
the meat of the defense, both sopho
mores, and have "come a long way" ac
cording to Snyder since the season began.
"They are hustlers, and can make the
good play for you," Snyder finished.
Bombers Down
Tacoma 45-26
By JANET O'DELL
Emerald Sports Writer
Three ex-Oregon grid stars —
Hugh Oldham, Ray Palm and
Paul Burleson accounted for six
touchdowns Sunday in the Eu
gene Bombers' 45-26 win over Ta
coma
The remaining nine points were
contributed by Tom Roach of
Portland, who booted a field goal
and all six PAT’s.
The victory boosted Eugene’s
record to 7-2 with one Pacific
Football League game remaining
this season — that's with the
Thunderbirds in Portland, Sun
day.
Tacoma didn’t prove to be the
easy 47-0 win it was on October
.8 This time, the Tyees allowed
Eugene only a 21-14 lead at half
time and rallied for two TD’s in
the last quarter.
The effort was in vain, however,
as the Bombers tallied twice
themselves in the fourth pe
riod.
Oldham started things off when
he took the game’s opening kick
off and ran 87 yards for the score,
his first of three.
After Tacoma knotted it at 7-7,
the Bombers used the ensuing
.kick-off to begin a drive from
their own 38.
In 12 plays, Eugene marched
to the Tacoma nine, after which
Oldham shot up the middle for
the score.
About a minute later, lineback
er Jack Clark intercepted a Tyee
pass on the visitors’ 35 to set up
another Eugene score— a five -
yard aerial from Roger Daniels
to Palm.
Tacoma took advantage of a 77
vard punt return plus three rush
ing plays to make it 21-14 at half
time.
Roach’s field goal midway in
the third quarter opened second
half scoring.
The Bombers stretched their
lead to 31-14 when Oldham made
a 26-yard sprint around left end,
culminating a 74-yard drive.
The Tyees tallied twice in the
opening five minutes of the final
quarter to come back into conten
tion.
However, Eugene retaliated
with two of its own via aerials by
Doug Post.
The first was a five-yarder to
Palm, giving the split end a to
tal of eight touchdowns this sea
son, followed by a 34-yard pass
play to Burleson.
Hockey Team Wins
Karen Meats led the Oregon
women’s field hockey team to a
3-1 victory over Marylhurst Sat
urday on Gerlinger Field. Miss
Meats scored two goals and team
mate Kathy Elliot tallied the oth
er in the Oregon win.
Next competition for the team
will be a three day tournament at
Ellensburg, Washington, Novem
ber 18-20.
The Oregon women’s volleyball
team placed third in the tourna
ment held at SOC, also Saturday.
