Travel Grants
The Inter-University Commit
tee on Travel Grants announces
opportunities for advanced grad
uate students, faculty members,
and post-doctoral researchers to
engage in study and research
in the Soviet Union, Bulgaria,
Czechoslovakia, and Hungary dur
ing the academic year, 1967-68.
These exchanges are made pos
sible by the intergovernmental
agreement on exchanges with the
USSR and agreements with the
respective educational organiza
tions in Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia,
and Hungary.
They are administered by the
Inter-University Committee on
Travel Grants, a multi-university
American organization whose ob
jective is to strengthen Ameri
can education.
The Inter-University Committee
administers three separate ex
changes with the USSR: an ex
change of advanced graduate stu
dents and young faculty, an ex
change of post-doctoral research
ers, and an exchange of Amer
ican teachers of Russian for a
special ten-week program during
the summer.
Participants in these exchanges
are chosen in national competi
tion through application and in
terview. Participants must have

Mark” marathon will get under
way at the University Wednesday
in support of Governor Mark Hat
field’s campaign for the U.S. Sen
ate.

Youth for Hatfield, say they will
push the ball to Corvallis on
Wednesday and later on to Port
land.
They promise plenty of food
and drinks to sustain the energy
of volunteers for push for Hat
field.

Flemming's Views on Draft...

He added that there are four
alternatives to the present draft
situation: a national lottery, im
proving and refining the present
system, abandoning the draft al
together and relying completely
on voluntary conscription, and
the idea of a universay national
service, which, Flemming said,
“fascinates me.”
"The direction the draft will
take depends very largely on
what will happen in Viet Nam,"
he said, concluding discussion
on that topic and looking around
the room for other raised hands.
The subjects raised by the stu
dents attending the banquet were
many and varied.
Flemming was asked about the
possibility of liberalizing women’s
closing hours to midnight during
the week and until 2 a.m. on
weekends.
This proposal grew out of Pan
hellenic’s request to the Conduct
Committee to extend hours until
11:30 p.m. on week nights.
The Committee said since this
would affect women living in

Flemming said that no decision
has been made yet on student
seating arrangements in the new
football stadium.
"As soon as the facts are avail
able I’ll present them to the stti
dent body representatives and the
ASUO Senate to bear their
views,” he said.
Another question raised con j
corned the possibility of having
the grading system changed from
letter grades to a complete pass
non-pass system.
Flemming said he wasn't too
optimistic of the chances for a
total switch-over but tliat "many
luculty members are willing and
interested to work in that direc
tion.”
