Oregon Meets Stanford

Oregon's Ducks, with a rookie quarterback and
a host of doubtful starters open 1966 AAWU
competition Saturday at Multnomah Stadium in
Portland against Stanford’s talent rich Indians.
Stanford is led by sophomore quarterback Gene
Washington and halfback Dave Lewis and boasts
a 2-1 record with wins over San Jose State and
Tulane. The Ducks are winless in three starts,
losing to Oklahoma, Utah, and San Jose State.
Despite last week’s 21-7 loss to San Jose State,
Oregon coach Len Casanova found several bright
spots in the Oregon offense.
One was the play of quarterback Mike Barnes,
who is slated to direct the Oregon attack Satur
day.
Barnes, after just one week of practice at the
helm, passed for 126 yards and ran for 33 yards
and one touchdown. A fierce competitor, Barnes
was particularly effective on the sprint out pass
and, despite lack of passing practice, completed
8 of 18.
Another boost was given to the offense by the
play of junior halfback, Scott Cress. Injured in
Oregon’s pre-season practice, Cress made his
first extended appearance of the season, catching
four passes for 90 yards and gaining 22 yards in
seven carries.
Oregon’s offense however suffered two vital
blows in early week drills.
Monday, first string fullback, Arlan Elms pulled
a hamstring muscle during a light drill and is un
likely to see action.
Another blow came in Tuesday’s drills when
strong running sophomore tailback, Claxton
Welch left the field with an injury after trying
to put on a block in a contact session.
Welch had not seen action since being injured
in Oregon’s season opener with Oklahoma and
was expected to be ready for the Indians. His
playing status for Saturday is now uncertain.
With Welch and Elms injured, Steve Jones will
likely remain at the tailback spot where in three
games he has become the Duck’s leading rusher
with 197 yards.
Jones, a 195 pound sophomore began the sea
son as a fullback and was moved back to that
position when Elms was injured. But that was
before Welch became hurt.
Kent Grote, a 6-2, 195 pound sophomore, will
start at fullback.
In previous meetings Stanford holds a 22-12 1
edge over the Ducks and the two teams are 6-6
in the northwest. The Ducks have dominated the
series in recent years with seven straight victories
from 1957 through 1963.
However, Stanford has defeated the Ducks for
the past two years with do-everything Dave Lewis
engineering last minute victories.

Brain Innovation

After predict ins at our usual 70-plus (in this case, 731 per cent
clip last week, PP decided to innovate a new device for this week
end’s games to keep from boring you with our infallible accuracy.
PP, you may or may not know, has five distinct parts to his bruin
that he uses to make his astounding predictions. One part takes into
account a team's offense, another, a team's defense, another, what
they had for breakfast, another, how many of the guys' parents are
watching, and still another, the molecular substructure formed from
the neutrons of the glucose of the sideline grass.
His predictions for a team are based on how many of the five
above things they have going for them If a team's offense and
defense is superior, for example, but everything else is against them,
chances are 3-2 they will lose.
So if a team has five things going for it, then it is a unnnimous
choice, and all but a shoo-in to win. In that case. PP will insert the
letter A in parentheses before that team. If one portion of PP’s brain
disagrees with the rest, then it is a consensus choice, and PP will
insert the letter B before the favorite. Any favorite winning by just
a 3-2 vote of the brain cells, gets just a C in front of it.
So, with that explained, PP will proceed with the predictions in
addition to the usual procedure of commenting on the more important
games
(C) STANFORD over Oregon by 1: In view of the Duck’s
performance the last three weeks, they have to be under
dogs. But in view of the Indians’ almost equally bad show
ings, the choice is a narrow one. Gene Washington will be
the difference . . . and PP deserts the Ducks for the first
time this year.
(A) OREGON STATE over Northwestern by 10: The Beaver de
fense is improving all the time. And, against Northwestern, the
offense should score. Expect a big day for Pete Pifer.
<B) SOUTHERN CAL over Washington by 7: Something in Wash
ington’s 38-22 thrashing of Ohio State convinced one of PP’s brain
divisions that the Huskies will win. But the rest say no.
(A) CALIFORNIA over San Jose State by 13 State's Holman will
find the Bear defense more rugged than expected. Cal is young, but
gaining confidence all the time. The Bears will win by putting the
pressure on Holman that Oregon’s defense couldn’t provide.
