Bruins PAC Best
Alter a second straight week of outstanding success (at
least he picked the winner, which is better than the coach
could do), the greatest predicter of all times, the Prestigious
Prognosticator, has consented to give the public one final
view of his amazing powers.
It has been noted by a great portion of our alert readers
(two) that PP's forecasts went slightly awry last week. When
informed of his public's dissatisfaction, PP admitted that his
crystal ball had been fogged by a mixture of alcohol, Eugene
air, school spirit, and Seattle wind, but promised, weather
conditions permitting, that this week’s predictions will again
be clear and precise.
1M: Doibele UO, Lumby OSU, Jackson UCLA, Mahan Cal. John
son WSU. There won’t be any wind in Palo Alto, and Mike should
win a close one.
220: Middleton USC, Jones UCLA, Frey UCLA, Questad Stan,
Beaty Cal. Middleton is a money runner, and beat the UCLA boys a
couple weeks back.
440: Middleton USC, Frey UCLA. Beaty Cal. Domansky UCLA,
Ward Stan. A double for the Trojan ace, but Beaty is the defending
champ and could threaten.
880: Bell UO, Carr USC, Buck USC. Breckow USC. Smith Cal.
Wade will be pressed for the first time this year, but should prove
he’s the best on the coast.
Mile: Day UCLA, Bess USC, Pyne UCLA. Link USC. Deubner Stan.
Even an injured Day should prove tops in this event.
3 Mile: Lindgren WSU, Moore UO. Pyne UCLA. Westman WSU,
Husaruk UCLA. Moore is the defending champion, but he’s hardly
in a class with Lindgren.
Steeplechase: Moore UO, Mortenson UO, Price Cal, Hansen UO,
Hunt OSU. This event is a Webfoot specialty, and Moore's just a little
faster :han Mortenson.
120 Hurdles: Copeland UCLA, Blum UO, McCullouch USC. Wil
liams UW, Kerry USC. Blum will beat Williams for the first time
ever, but Copeland will win.
440 Hurdles: McCrary Cal, Williams UW, Johnson UCLA. Buller
UO, Walsh Stan. McCrary has the best clocking, but Williams’ time
on a windy day is impressive.
440 Relay: California. UCLA, USC, Stanford, Washington. Only the
Bears or the Bruins can win this one.
Mile Relay: UCLA, California, USC, Stanford. WSU. UCLA ended
Cal’s win string at 35 straight last week and should win easily.
Long Jump: Albin OSU, Vaughn Stan, Walsh Stan, Williams UW.
Talbott, WSU. The little Beaver should win easily over the two
Indians.
Discus: Steinhauer UO. Carlson USC, Stoecker Stan, Pemberton
UW, Schneider, Cal. Steinhauer has only the third best throw, but
he’s been improving each week while Carlson’s best toss came
several weeks ago.
High Jump: Weinreich UCLA, Heet USC, Keppel WSU, Parker
USC, White OSU. Any of the top three could take this one.
Javelin: Selby UCLA, Lowry OSU, O’Donnell WSU, Sundbye
UCLA. Bonkrude UCLA. Selby is only the best of three Uclan point
getters in this event.
Shot Put: Steinhauer UO, Gloecker UCLA, Samsam OSU, Durfin
USC, Foskett UO. Even another sub-par effort should win this one.
Triple Jump: Samuels USC, Olmstead UCLA, Albin OSU, Talbott
WSU, Brame UO. Only the top three can challenge here, and
Samuels’ injury might hold him down.
Pole Vault: Savage UCLA, Esheman Stan, Berge UCLA, Smith
Stan, Hergenrather OSU. Savage is the national collegiate record
holder and should edge Esheman for the blue ribbon.
Team Totals: UCLA 76, USC 49, Oregon 43, Stanford 26, Califor
nia 25. OSU 22, WSU 18, Washington 11.

It was only four years ago that
! Julie Kaspari llrst picked up a
1 tennis racket.
Since then, the personable
blonde-haired freshman at the
University has, through drive and
determination, risen to the top in
Northwest women’s tennis rank
ings.
Currently ranked number one
in the Northwest’s 18-and-under
division and second in the wom
en’s division, her rise to the
' number one spot began when she
took up tennis as a freshman at
David Douglas High School in
Portland.
“I was always interested in
sports and tennis was the only
one girls could play," Julie staled.
Julie showed promise in a hur
ry and made it to the quarter
finals of the state tournament her
freshman year. The following
summer she joined the Irving
j ton Tennis Club in Portland and
won a club-tourney in Vancouver,
Washington.
Hard-working Soph
When school began her sopho
more year Julie was determined
to improve, getting up at 5 a m.
and running to school to practice.
"If you want to be good you
have to do it by sheer determina
tion and that’s what I did,” com
mented Julie.
Her hard work payed off as she
reached the finals of the state
tournament. But the state cham
pionship was a prize which was
to constantly elude her.
For three years Julie made it
to the finals but each year she
met defeat, losing 12-10 in the
third set her junior year.
“I was sick for weeks after
that,” she reflected, half jokingly,
half seriously.
However, defeat did not dis
courage Julie and by the time
she entered the University last
fall her victories had earned her
top recognition in the Northwest.
"I don't know whnt got her
here but we're Rind to have her,"

"She enjoys practicing os much

On the courts, Julie’s fiamhouy
i ant and aggressive style, which
j seems unlikely to come from a
; girl with a pleasant smile and
| voice, has led the women's team
1 to a 4 0 record.

Last weekend Julie led Ore
gon's entry in the AAWU chant
i pionships at Berkeley and came
back with the consolation title. It
was her first tournament in Cali
fornia and she came back unawed
at the quality of the southland's
tennis players.
“They have no more ability than
I Northwest players but they have
more facilities and better
' weather," she said “The main
i difference is that they have all

year round to play
•'In order to compete with
them," she continued, “tennis
players up here have to work
that much harder in the time they
have."
Julie will be defending her
number one rating today as the
Pacific Northwest Women's Tour
nament begins at tin- University.
That she will lie as serious
about tennis in the future is
doubtful to Julie.
"This is my last year in the
18's." she explained, "and my
number one ranking was kind of
the climax of the tennis year.
Everything has ended happily and
I'm satistied There are more iin
portant things to think about,
such as school."
Julie does, however, have one
more goal, and will continue to
play for Oregon in search of it
with the same desire and deter
mination she has displayed in the
past.
