that 12 year period the Ducks
have been pressed only twice, by
Washington }n 1954 and 1055.
Since that time, a 9V* point mar
gin of victory has been Oregon’s
smallest.
This year should he no excep

such outstanding Individual per

Turning these three athletes
into valuable points, plus the ef
forts of distance men Ken Moore
and Bruce Mortensen, the Ducks

mile, an it steeplechase. The
steeplechase has been added to
the program to make 18 events
which will be scored on a 5 3 2 1
basis.
Coach Bill Bowerman reports
that Moore will go only in the
three mile which could turn out
to be the feature event of the
meet as Moore and WSU's Gerry
Lindgren will knock heads for the
first time this year.
Lindgren has run the two mile
just twice this season due to ill
ness but his second outing was
a blistering 8:39 5 Moore’s best
time is 8:44.2. WSl"s Chris West
man could also be near the head
of the pack at the finish as he has
recorded a two mile best of 8:56.0.
Steinhauer will be in Los An
gcles tonight to meet Randy Mat
son at the Colliseum Relays and
then will hot foot it to Seattle
for the Northern Division meet
Steinhauer will compete in the
shot and discus in Seattle and
must be considered the favorite

The Ducks had to scratch Hob
Williams from the three mile due
to injury but Bruce Morteasen
will join Moore in that event and
will also be out to defend his ND
steeplechase title.
Bowerman also reports that he
plans to use sophomore Haul Cope
only in the 440 hurdles so he can
give his best all-out performance
Bowerman has tabbed the host
Washington Huskies as the team
to watch as a possible challenge
to the Ducks supremacy. "I know
the Huskies are stronger than
when we beat them (86-59). And
we've lost some people since
that meet too," said the Duck
coach.

Defending titlists returning this
year will have problems holding
their first place positions earned
Steinhaucr, in the shot put, is
possibly the only sure repeater,
but he will have a tough time in
the discus. Butch Lumby of OSU
won the 100 and 220 in 1963 but
lias been ruled out of the meet
by coach Bernie Wagner. Wagner
is hoping to have Lumby ready
for the AAWU meet a week
hence.
WSlf’i Chris Westman won the
three-mile last year but his title
is in jeopardy to Moore and Lind
gren, while Dave Williams of
Washington will have to turn in
a remarkable time to top Ore
gon's amazing sophomore Bob
Blum in the 12Gyard hurdles.
The other two returnees are
Bob Keppel of WSU in the high
jump, and Bill Hcikkila in the
javelin. Keppel, who has leaped
G-lOVi, should repeat, but Hcik
kila will have to improve con
siderably to retain his 1965 crown.
