VISTA Drive Ends Today

conclude their visitation and re
cruitment at the University today

VISTA, will be in rooms 333 and
334 of the Student Union today
to answer questions from stu
dents interested in joining the
program. The rooms will open at
8 a m.
Following a VISTA Week held
at the University in late Febru
ary, the University became one
of the top-ranking institutions in
the nation in recruitment for the
“domestic Peace Corps.”
Forty-eight persons from the
University are now in service as

Hilgard O’Reilly Sternberg,
eminent geographer whose pro
fessional interests have taken
him to the far corners of the
earth, present an assembly on
“Are the Tropics Viable?—An An
swer from the Amazon" at 8 p.m
tonight in the Student Union
Sternberg is professor of geo
graphy at the University of Cali
fornia at Berkeley.
Born in Brazil, Sternberg was
graduated from the Universidade
do Brasil where he' also received
a doctorate in geography. He did
postgraduate work at the Univer
sity of California and received his
Ph.D, from Louisiana State Uni
versity. He has received an hon
orary doctorate from the Univer
site de Toulouse.
His professional teaching ex
perience has been at the Univer
sidade do Brasil, where he was
head of the geography depart
ment, and at Institutio Rio Bran
co (foreign service institute) of
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
and at Pontificia Universidade
Catdica do Rio de Janeiro. He
has been at California since 1964.
He has been director of the
Center of Research in Geography
in Brazil, was on the organizing
committee of the eighteenth In
ternational Geographical Con
gress and is a former member of
the UNESCO Advisory Commit
tee for Arid Zone Research. He
has also held a Guggenheim Fel
lowship.

75 per cent of its Volunteers are
college trained. Those selected
for the program receive $50 a
month which is banked for them
by VISTA until their year is up,
