New Supply Co-op Will Open Monday

The new C'o op store at the
corner of 13th and Kincaid Street,
will be open for business Monday.
At the moment, most of the
supplies huve been moved out
of the old store in the basement
of Chapman Hall. The Co-op,
however, will remuin closed to
day ami Saturday because of re
location problems.
In a Thursday meeting, the
Co op Hoard designated 150 Sci i
l•n(•c, the Student Union, the
library, and Commonwealth as
voting booths for next Wednes
day's Co-op elections In order to
vote, u Co-op membership card
must be presented. One fresh
man will lx* elected to serve on
the Hoard for a year, and two
sophomores will be elected to
serve a two-year term
The Hoard also discussed the
possibility of closing the Co-op
annex in the School of Art. Ger
ald Henson, Co-op manager, said
that from a “business standpoint,
the Co-op is just breaking even”
and that the “annex is much like
a canteen because more candy
and gum arc sold there than art
supplies.
He also pointed out that this is
a special service not granted to
other students and that when the
annex was closed a year and a
half ago, there was no “squawk.”
Stan Darling, the Co-op’s attor
ney, asked permission to begin
a survey to see if the Co-op is tax
exempt. Many college book stores
similar to the Co-op are tax
exempt, but he pointed out they
arc owned by the specific school
and controlled by the adminis
tration. The Co-op, however, is
one of the few student-owned and
student-controlled college book
stores in the country.
Henson also reported that re
leipts are running $172,000 ahead
»f last year at this time.
