Track Team Meets 'Goliath' Bruins

The Ducks will be going to slay
Goliath Saturday at Hayward
Field without David. Duck quar
ter-miler Jere VanDyk was ruled
out of the UCLA meet due to a
case of the flu.
That's the situation facing Ore
gon coach Bill Bowerman as he
leads his crusaders against the
mighty UCLA Bruins in a meet
starting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday
with the broad jump event. Bun
ning events begin at 2 p.m.
Sports writers ail over the
Northwest have tabbed the Ducks
as 40-55 point underdogs but the
mystic Duck wizard of track is
unawed. “We’re planning on go
ing out there and having a meet,”
Bowerman said.
The Bruins have won seven
straight dual encounters this year
and the Ducks are undefeated
with a 3-0 record. The Bruins'
record is more impressive since
they have scored 100 points or
more in four of their meets.
Bruins Impressive
Bruin coach Jim Bush will no
doubt be trying for a victory as
well as another 100 pointer, while
the Ducks will be just as eager to
be the first team to stop the amaz
ing machine from the Southland.
The Bruins have many, many,
impressive performers, including
miler Bob Day. pole vaulter Marc
Savage, sprinter Norm Jackson
and quarter-miler Bob Frey. An
other strong point in the Bruins'
favor is their -amazing balance
and depth.
However, the Ducks have some
pretty strong performers them
selves. including the second lead
ing shot-putter in the nation for
1966 in Neal Steinhauer, miler
Wade Bell, distance men Ken
Moore and Bruce Mortensen.

I Oregon coach Bill Bowerman
! lamented the loss of Van Dyk by
! saying, “Without Jere we’re worse
off than before, and things weren't
too good to begin with Jere fig
ured to do something for us."
Bowerman also picked his en
trants for the meet. Mike Diebelo
will run the 100 and 220. with
Paul Eiliott, Marcia! Hunter and
Bob Blum in the 120 highs. Blum
has a best of 14.0 and will prob
ably be hard pressed by UCLA’s
Ron Copeland whose best is 14.1.
The 440 which was tabbed as
an outstanding event with Frey
and VanDvk could still be a great
one as the Dueks have Gordy
Payne and Dean Southam entered
Frey has a best of 46 6 and Payne
has a best of 48.5.
Half-Mile Feature
The half-mile could be the fea
tured event of the meet, next to
the mile. The Duck runners in
clude Don Scott. Mike Crunican,
and John Palo Crunican is the
cream of the crop here with a
time of 1:51.6 followed by Scott
at 1:51.7. The Bruin’s best is
Dennis Breckow with 1:50.3.
The mile field will include
UCLA’s great distance ace Bob
Day and Oregon’s own Wade Bell.
Day's best in '66 is 3:58.4 and
Bell's is 4:04.5. This should be a
whale of a race and very possibly
a sub-four minute job. Dave Wil
bourn and Geoff Hollister are also
Duck entrants.
In the two-mile the Ducks have
their ace Ken Moore, along with
Mortensen, and Phil Hansen.
Here again Day is likely to be
present and his best is 8:37.2, fol
lowed closely by teammate Geoff
Pavne at 8:47.2. Moore’s best is
9:00.3.
The relay events will line-up
something like this: in the 440
for Oregon will be Cope. Payne,
Blum, and DieUele, while the
Bruins will go with Okoye, Frey,
Copeland, and Jackson. The best
time by Oregon is 41.5, while the
Bruins have reeled off a 40.0.
Good Field Events
The field events could also pro
vide some outstanding competi
tion.
Neal Steinhauer will be opposed
in the shot by Traugott Gloecker
from West Germany. The big
German has a best of 60-34 while
Steinhauer has gone 65-34. Stein
hauer should also capture the
discus but could be pressed by
Dave Weber who’s best is only
four inches less.
The most outstanding UCLA
field man is vaulter Marc Savage j
who transfered from California
when he became dissatisfied with |
the school and the track program
Savage has responded by being;
consistently over 16-6 all season j
In fact, Duck fans could be
treated to a 17-foot leap if every
thing goes right. Savage has been
pressing that mark for three;
weeks and has raised the NCAA
record to 16-9 in the process.
The javelin throw is also a
strong Bruin point getter. No less
tnan three men are over 230 feet
