    'Sir to Leave...
(Continual from payr I)
were 3,000 students on the cam
pus, student activities were limit
ed mainly to such events as Home
comm# and Junior Weekend, and
the Student Union and Kducation
al Activities budget was $.'100,000
Now there are 13,000 students,
activities have broadened con
siderably, especially in (lie poll
tical area, and the budget this
year will come close to $1 million.
"Constant Contacts”
University President Arthur S.
Flemming said, "There are few
people who have so intimate a
knowledge of the University
alumni and friends because of
the constant contacts he has had
with students during his many
successful years directing the
Student Union.
"We are most fortunate in be
ing able to call on the talents
of someone with the abilities Mr
Kllingson possesses to continue
to provide the University with in
spired leadership in this impor
tant field."
Kllingson made the "basic de
cision" to accept the appointment
in the middle of March, though
there were details to work out
after that The offer "came as a
complete surprise."
"I had not anticipated that kind
of work," he said, "and I go into
it with reservations, since I am
following an extremely able man.”
Itexrrvotionx
He said the reservations were
"whether I could do it" and
"whether I would he happy doing
it."
His new job?
' You can't equate that job with
this one." Kllingson said. "The
ability of public institutions to
move ahead will be determined
by their ability to develop pri
vate giving of uncommitted funds
to supplement state funds and
federal grant*.”
He said one area be hoped to
expand was a program of student
giving. "If we can develop the
concept of giving in the four
undergraduate years, it should
carry over,” he said
He said he also hopes to raise
money for areas in which he is
especially interested, such as im
provement of on-campus recrea
tional facilities.
Confidence in Cross
He expressed confidence in
( loss's ability to handle the job.
"Jack's relationship with students
is good," he said, "lie’s complete
ly honest with students. 1 feel
confident that he will display the
greatest effectiveness and effici
ency in this position."
Cross chuckled that, "I can see
things being pretty rough. If I
can follow Si's example 1 can’t
go wrong. I think he has estab
lished a rapport with students
that few men have."
"You get into :i pretty rough
spot taking over from a guy who
has a national reputation,” Cross
added, referring to Ellingson's
position as president of the As
sociated College Unions.
Cross said Kllingson will con
tinue to work on long range SU
planning, the 19ti(»-67 budget, and
the draft of the Student Activi
ties Committee.
“Busy Summer”
lie said he was "looking for
ward to an extremely busy sum
mer to get prepared for the on
slaught of the coming year."
He said two new people will be
brought in on a temporary basis,
one to replace him as associate
director, another to substitute for
Program Director Adell McMillan,
who will be on sabbatical next
year.
Cross said he had asked only
to be named acting director, since
he is unsure whether he will he
able to stay. He said he did not
know if he would be a candidate
for the permanent position.
