Bell versus Bill
By RANDE WII.MARTH
Sports Editor
The faces will be the same, but one of the teams will be different
Saturday as Oregon travels to Berkeley for its second PAC dual
track meet. As in the past. Duck coach Bill Bowerman will be facing
familiar Sam Bell, former Oregon State track coach
But Bell is now leading the California track squad and. if past
performances are any indication, the Ducks have a two-thirds chance
of winning During Bell's tour of duty at OSU from 1959 to 1965
Bowerman’s teams defeated the Beavers in eight out of 12 dual
*" San Jose State has been added to the competition at Cal and the
scores will be kept in both the double dual and triangular meet
method. _
PRESS BOX TO GET NAME
The new Howe Field press box will be dedicated shortly before
the opening pitch of the 1966 Northern Division baseball season at
3 p m. Fridav in memory of former Eugene Register-Guard sports
editor Dick Strite. According to Oregon sports publicist Hal Childs.
St rite seldom missed an Oregon game and sat through many windy
and rainy afternoons covering Duck ball games. Strite died last
July after serving several decades as a Guard sports writer.
Oregon faces OSU in the ND opener.

place in conference standings all the way down to one point for an
eighth place finish). 52-39.
OREGON SIXTH IN CUP RACE
UCLA nabbed a first spot in football, seconds in basketball and
swimming, a third in wrestling and a fourth in gymnastics.
Oregon State is third with 31, Washington State fourth with 28.

Washington eighth with 261-2.
The Ducks' points came on a second place spot in wrestling, a
fourth in swimming, a fourth place tie in basketball, a sixth in
gvmnastics and an eighth in football. ...

Dedicated DistanceMen
Head Frosh Track Team
By RICK FITCH
Sports Writer
If past performances are any
sign, track coach Bill Bowerman
has on his hands two of Oregon's
finest distance running prospects
since Archie San Romani and
Dyrol Burleson
Freshmen Roscoe Divine and
Hal Jackson came to the Univer
sity with two of the best records
in high school distance running of
anyone on the frosh track team
members.
Divine had a high school best
of 4:10 in the mile in his home
state of Washington and in his
senior year took first in the state
in both cross-country and the
mile.
Jackson has no less impressive
credentials, finishing first in the
two mile at the Oregon state meet
as a junior and running a 9:19.8
to finish second as a senior.
It is Bowerman's view that, “If
their interest remains keen, they
have the potential to become
very fine runners.” Both adhere
to Bowerman's philosophy that
school and running should be the
only things to occupy a good track
man.
Said Jackson, “I came here be
cause of Bowerman’s attitude. He
doesn't baby his athletes.”
Divine remarked. “1 came here
first to sot an education and sec i
ond for running.”
in backing up their convictions,
both Jackson and Divine train for
two to three hours per day. Often
times, the two will work out for
a half hour in the morning to
gether, then practice two to three
hours in the afternoon alone.
Began as Sprinter
Jackson took up running as a
sprinter in the ninth grade at
Grant High in Portland Later
in the year, he discovered that
distance running was his forte,
and as a sophomore, began run
ning the HHO, mile and two mile
He posted best times of 1:57 3 in
the 880 and 4:15 8 in the mite
during the course of his high
school career in addition to his
line two-mile clocking in the state
meet.
Divine played football, basket
ball and hurdled as a sophomore
at Columbia High in Vancouver,
Washington, but the “turning
point,” as he put it, came when
Oregon's NCAA miler Archie San
Homani convinced him to turn
his athletic efforts toward the
mile after running with the Ore
gon freshman
Divine captured the state cross
country meet as a junior, but
then broke his leg and couldn t
compete for the rest of the year
Weather Postpones
PSC-Oregon Game
The Oregon baseball team lost one to the weather Tuesday after
noon after Monday’s rainstorm forced postponement of the scheduled
doubleheader with Portland State College.
The late afternoon and evening storm left Howe f ield unplayable,
and one of the games has been re scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p m .
field conditions permitting. The infield was being worked back into
plaving condition early Tuesday afternoon.
Don Kirsch, whose charges have now won seven games in a row,
had not definitely made a choice of pitchers for the contest, but
tentatively plans to give four of his sophomore hurlers a few innings
work each. , .
Left handers Mike Snow and Mike Nicksic, as well as Joe Kniser
and Larry Hills are the possible pitchers.
