formances cost $1.50 for adults,
$1 for children under 12, and
tickets for the Saturday morning
shows are 50 cents for everybody.
Tickets are on sale at the SU
main desk.
The exhibition and bazaar will
be open from 9 a m. until 10 p.m.
Wednesday and Thursday, and
until midnight on Friday and Sat
urday, and from noon to 5 p.m.
Sunday. Admission to both is
free.
Bazaar Expanded
Since last year’s bazaar was
sold out within 24 hours, the
foreign students have expanded
this year’s offerings for those who
wish to shop for foreign art work,
souvenirs, and candy.
The exhibition will include dis
plays of art, artifacts, costumes
and cultural representations from
around the globe. There will also
be a space and communications
exhibit sponsored by the Air
Force. -
Free travelogues from 20 dif
ferent countries will be shown
continuously all day Saturday and
international meals will be served
in the SU throughout the festival.
The International Festival is
sponsored by the campus YM
YWCA in association with the
Eugene Chamber of Commerce,
Lane County merchants, and serv
ice clubs.

right around the corner,” he j
warned.
Daniels pointed to the exten
sive use of solar energy in the j
! United States’ space program, but
: said that he is most concerned

"I’m completely committed to
it,” he said. "You can't have a |
j stable civilization with islands of I
prosperity in a sea of poverty.
For our peace of mind, we ought
to help them.”

But business is only mildly in
terested in solar energy’s develop
ment because they need a more
rapid return on their money, he
added.

The cooker’s basis is a parabolic
reflector, four feet in diameter.
“But women don't like to cook
out-of-doors,” Daniels said Also,
since American women don't use
solar cookers, foreign women feel
they lack "prestige." But the men
aren’t so proud.
Daniels told of one Mexican
man who was delighted with the
cooker, saying that he had been
spending one quarter of his in
come on tire wood Often, people
have to carry wood on their backs
for miles, he said.
Great Energy Source
The chemist, who taught at the
University of Wisconsin for nearly
40 years until 1959, also cited the
sun as a potential source of
energy for heating, cooling, water
| distillation, and generation of
power.
"Solar cooling may come In first
perhaps in a bin way," Daniels
said.
But solar energy also has its
disadvantage* While being abun
dant and lasting, sunlight is also
intermittent and of low intensity.
Women become frustrated, he
said, when they're cooking dinner
and a large cloud blacks out the
sunlight.
Daniels doesn't predict solar
distillation in centers of popula
tion because of the vast amount
of land required to do the job.
But it may work for less densely
populated areas, especially out
side the U S., he said Greece is
an example of a country where
it is being used on a relatively
small scale with some success.
Equator Hit? User
Up predicted that the greatest
use for solar energy would he
found around the equator, because
that is a region of both intense
sun and abject poverty.
The rapid expansion of science
was partly responsible for the
interest in solar energy, he said
“Science attracts creative minds;
because there are no more geo
graphical frontiers, there are
more minds working In science
than ever before."
There is also rapid publication
of scientific progress, plus govern
ment support Intellectual free
dom thrives in most countries of
the world, he added.
The only problem left Is that
of finding means of transporting,
containing, and using the sun s
energy.
We haven't much to worry
about because we've got our sun,
but we'd better get busy and
learn how to use it,” Daniels con
cluded.
