Distance Battles

What’s going to happen when Bruce Mortenson returns?
The Oregon distance ace hasn't competed for Bill Bowerman s
Duck track team as of yet and. when he does, he 11 add his talents
to an already solid distance field.
Mortenson reigns as the NCAA and Northern Division steeple
chase champion and his winning 9:00 8 1965 time was topped last
week by teammate Ken Moore. Moore ran an 8:55 8 and was fol
lowed Saturday in an open meet at Hayward Field by a pair ot
Ducks, who along with Moore, have qualified for the NCAA cham
pionships in the event. Bob Williams finished the race in 9:ll.o and
Phil Hansen completed it in 9:14.1.
Mortenson has been competing in Morocco in long distance events
and his return should set up some good battles in the distance races
with his teammates.
A PRIZE FROM T11E EAST
It looks like Oregon wrestling coach Art Keith has picked up a
winner from the East—and not just out of state.
Keith, the new Duck coach who guided the Webfoot wrestlers
to a second-place finish in the AAWU this winter, landed Kenichi
Kanno while Kanno was touring Oregon with a group of Japanese
high school all-star wrestlers.
Kanno, a senior now at North Eugene, plans on attending the
University this fall And he couldn't have better credentials tor
entering as a collegiate wrestler. ,
Kanno finished high in two recent AAU meets in I ortland and
Saturday, in one of these meets, placed second in the Oregon AAU
open wrestling championships at Multnomah Athletic Club.
Two weeks ago. in the Far Western AAU Championships at
MAC, he defeated Dwayne Keller, the 1965 second-place finisher in
the national AAU Tournament. If enough funds can be raised, the
Japanese wrestler hopes to compete in the national AAU tourney
being held in Omaha this weekend.
Another wrestler familiar to Keith scored a win in the Far
Western meet This fellow competes for Stanford, though. Len
Borchers wrestled under Keith at David Douglas High in Portland
for three years, toured Europe with the Oregon prep all-stars last
summer, went undefeated as an Indian freshman in the 154-pound
class and then took his weight division in the Far Western meet.
He was also voted the meet s outstanding wrestler.

THE UNIVFHS1TY rugby train will be doing more of IhU this
summer—only In England. Together with OSl . the Ducks will
send a 26-man team to tour England and Wales this August. At the
center of the above action Is Oregon team captain Bruce Howe
who is being bulldogged to the turf in a game with Washington
earlier this season.
Rugby is supposed to be the
international form of football,
and Oregon’s team is no excep
tion.
The Oregon ruggers together
with Oregon State will conduct a
first-ever international tour this
summer, leaving Oregon Aug. 24
for an 18-day visit of England and
\Y ales. There they will meet eight
of the best university teams in
the Islands.
Actually, this tour is a first
ever for any sport. Jack Cross,
who as associate director of the
Student Union heads the Oregon
rugby program, said in a state
ment released Tuesday that "The
two teams will represent the state
of Oregon Accordingly, they
will wear navy blue and gold
(state) colors.”
"That,” he added, “is the first
time this has ever been done.
As far as competition is con
cerned, the teams the Oregon
squad will engage are definitely
impressive: Oxford. Liverpool,
Northhampton — even the U.S.
Navy team based in London.
“Actually, they will generally
be of about the same caliber as we
experienced in the Northwest,"
Cross said. "But there are teams

was triggered by an invitation
from Gwyn Evans, physical edu
cation professor at tin* University
of Aberyswyth in Wales w ii o
coached the University rugby
squad in 1904 while working on
his masters Impressed with the
enthusiasm he found for the game
here, Kvans began to make plans
for the tour immediately after re
turning to Wales
The project currently has the
support of the two university
presidents Arthur Flemming of
Oregon and James Jensen of OSf
