Duck Hood Team Halts Pilot Rally
PORTLAND (Special)—Oregon
halted a University of Portland
late-game rally in a non-confer
ence basketball game and went
on to a 78-75 victory in the Me
morial Coliseum here Thursday
night.
Trailing 42-31 at half time, and
by 16 points. 50-34. at one time
in the second half, the Pilots put
on a late surge to pull even with
the Ducks with 3:42 left as Paul
Gloden hit on a 12-footer and
knotted the score, 70-70.
Oregon's John PinkstafT put the
Ducks ahead by two on a rebound
shot 30 seconds later, but Ed ]
Clark, high point man for the
Pilots and the game with 24, hit
a field goal with 2:40 left and tied
the game again.
Then four free throws iced the
victory, the seventh in 14 starts,
for the Webfoots. Clark fouled
Pinkstaff, good for two points
from the charity stripe, and then
I Portland’s Jim Benjamin fouled
Nick Jones underneath the Ore
j gon liasket.
Jones sank two free tosses with
51 seconds remaining, shoving j
I Oregon to a 70-73 lead. Both
squads scored a field goal in the
last 15 seconds — Oregon’s final
two points coming otl a PinkstafT
tipin with three seconds left but
that three point lead was the ball
game.
"I knew it would be tough up
here,” said Oregon coach Steve
Belko after the contest was de
cided. "They don't play like a
3-10 team.” The loss dropped the
Pilots' record to a 3-11 mark.
Belko was impressed with Clark
and Gloden, Clark getting 24
points and liloden 20. Clark show

Swimmers Host Huskies
By GORDON ROSENBERG
Sports Writer
Almost anything could happen
at Leighton Pool this Saturday.
Oregon’s swimming team, fresh
off last Saturday’s victory over
Oregon State, returns home for
the first time in three weeks to
host the University of Washing
ton at 3 p.m.
“We upset them in their pool
last year,” stated Oregon coach
Don Van Rossen. “They will be
shooting for revenge.”
At the time, the defeat was
Washington’s only home loss in
several years. It also was only
the second Oregon victory in
seven years of competition against
the Huskies.
Washington lost a close 53-41
decision at home to the current
NCAA champions. Southern Cali
fornia. earlier this year.
The Huskies are led by juniors
Tim Roark and Aldy Meinhardt,
who were stand-outs as sopho
mores a year ago.
Roark is a versatile swimmer
who placed high in last season’s
finals of the 100-yard freestyle
and 100-yard butterfly.
Roark, Meinhardt Tough
Besides these events, Roark
also has participated recently in
the individual medley, backstroke,
and team relays. Against USC
this season, he turned in a great
time of 2:03 1 in losing the in
dividual medley to all-American
Roy Saari by four-tenths of a
second.
Gymnastics Team
Due EW Match

If you were at last Saturday’s
Oregon-Oregon State basketball
game, you got a preview during
halftime of one of this Satur
day’s top sports event.
The time for this classic is 2
p.m., the place is McArthur Court,
and the event is Oregon’s gym
nastic team meeting Eastern
Washington.
Oh, it’s only a gymnastics meet,
you say. Just remember this. Bat
man and Robin didn’t learn their
tumbling tricks sliding down the
bat poles. Nor did Jon Arnett
learn to keep his balance on the
football field by running into
dummies all day long, or did Bill
Russell learn to jump so high
by playing hopscotch — just to
name a few well known gymnasts.
Only Third Year
This is only the third year of
intercollegiate competition for
the gymnastics team, but the
team members all reflect coach
Dick Smith’s attitude: “We’re go
ing to be winners this year. We’re
going to give some teams that
have beaten us badly the past
two years a real tough time.”
The team’s current record is
1-1. Earlier in the season the
Duck team beat Chico State 145
100, and lost to Washington State,
152-145.
Team captain John Turchi, a
junior from Lake Oswego, had
this to say about the meet Satur
day: “We all want to win this
one since they’ve beat us the past
two years. We only lost to Wash
I ington State by seven points,
which is a pretty small margin
in gymnastics, and Washington
State beat Eastern Washington
pretty good. It should be a real
close meet.”
West Tops Squad
Another top member of the
gymnastics team is A1 West. West
is a junior from South Eugene,
and has been competing for five
years. A1 rates himself best in
the parallel bars, but always
scores points in six of the seven
events.
Smith had high praise for
West’s ability: “A1 has really
made progress in polishing the
moves in his routines this year.
' In fact, the whole team is work
ing on a higher level of ability
this year than ever before.”
The Duck mentor rated several
people as possible winners in the
seven events. ‘‘The trampoline is
probably our strongest event with
Turchi, Art English, Larry Jack
son and Tom Heinbegner all
strong contenders.”
West was rated tops in the
parallel bars, and West and Allan
Amsbury were named in the hori
zontal bar. Turchi and Jackson
are the top Duck competitors in
the free exercise, and Smith
named Ken Belt and Mike Olsen
for their ability on the side horse. j
The ring event is handled by
Don Cooper and Tom Spalding,
while John Palmer and Olsen
spend their talents vaulting.
‘ Our team has come a long way
in the past two years,” said Smith,
“I hope more of the student body
will start attending our meets.”

Meinhardt is another versatile
performer who swims butterfly,
freestyle, and relay events, He
placed lifth in last season's 200
yard butterfly finals.
In the Southern California
meet, Meinhardt won the 200
yard butterfly in a fast 2:019,
the same as his time in last sea
son's pressure-packed league fi
nals.
“If they put both Roark and
Meinhardt in the same relay, we
won’t stand much of a chance in
it,” stated Van Rossen.
Another strong point in the
Husky attack is on the three
meter diving board. Top diver
on the club is junior Dan Hull
He is backed up by junior Paul
Witzke.
Divers Rematched
Hull defeated Oregon's ace,
Larry Follinsbee, by 20 points in
a special meet in Seattle last
weekend
Follinsbee will be gunning for
revenge Saturday. Another Web
foot boardman with a good shot
at scuttling the opposition is Don
Merkt, who captured an easy first
place against OSU.
“We hope to win the diving,
50- and 100-yard freestyles, and
breaststroke,” said Van Rossen.
“Seconds and thirds will probab
ly decide the meet.”
He pointed out that Washing
ton is weak in the breaststroke,
and said the Ducks should take
the eight points for first and sec
ond in this event.
“Well depend largely upon
Jay Greening in the relays and
sprints,” stated Van Rossen.
Wood, Hess Important
Also important to the Oregon
cause will be the performances
of captain Dale Wood in the 500
yard freestyle and sophomore
Bruce Hess in the relays and
sprints.
“We’re working hard to get up
psychologically,” expressed Van
Rossen. "The Washington meet
has been our traditional for quite
a while.”
Indeed, the meet promises to
be hard-fought and close. Both
teams are made up of promising
sophomores and juniors. Most of
Washington’s stars, including, of
course, Roark and Meinhardt, are
juniors.
"This meet may go down to
the freestyle relay (the last event
on the program) before it’s de
cided,” concluded Van Rossen,
“but either team has the chance
to win it earlier.”
The three o'clock varsity meet
follows competition between the
freshman teams, which starts at
one.
