Shriver Scholar Program Set Up
The University Poverty Coun
cil will consider about 20 appli
cations Friday for competition in
the Sargent Shriver Scholars
Program.
The scholarship program com
petition is open to “young Ameri
cans who have distinguished
themselves by outstanding work
in the War on Poverty,” accord
ing to an Office of Economic Op
portunity spokesman. Shriver is
director of the OEO. He was in
charge of the Peace Corps until
last week.
Seven national winners will be
chosen — one from each of the
seven OEO geographical regions
—“who best exemplify the spirit
of self-help and community serv

To Give Recital
A faculty recital at the Uni
versity at 8 p.m. today in the
School of Music auditorium will
feature Lawrence Maves. violin:
and William Woods, piano, per
forming sonatas by Mozart,
Beethoven, and contemporary
composer Harold Shapiro.
Selections to be performed are
Mozart's “Sonata in G Major for
Violin and Piano, K. 379," Shi
piro’s “Sonata,” and Beethoven’s
“Sonata in C Minor for Violin
and Piano, Op. 30, No. 2.
Maves is an assistant professor
of music, and Woods is an asso
ciate professor of music. Both
performers have had experience
as solo and chamber music re
citalists on the West Coast, and
both are members of the Uni
versity Trio.

For Frosh Girls
The annual Smarty Party ,
sponsored by Mortar Board for
freshman women who received
a 3.0 or higher GPA fall term
will be held at 6:30 p.m. today
in the Alumni Lounge, second
floor of Gerlinger. All fresh
man women who received a
3.0 or higher GPA are invited.
Mortar Board members
should meet at 6:15 p.m. in the
Alumni Lounge and should
wear their uniforms.
English Assistants
To Recite Poetry
Six University poets will recite
their own work at a reading at
8 p.m. today in the Student Union.
The event is sponsored by the
Department of English. A coffee
hour will follow.
The six poets are Duane Acker
son, Albert Drake, Barbara Drake,
Lawson Inada, Douglas Lawder
and Stephen Tudor. All are grad
uate assistants in English, and
all but Lawder have published in
; several magazines.
Beta-AOPi Winner
In Match Tuesday
The team of Beta Theta Pi and
Alpha Omicron Pi led during
the entire match Tuesday in Uni
versity College Bowl competition.
They defeated the team com
posed of the Male Counselors and
Gamma Hall residents 165-60.
College Bowl features a live
studio audience and the matches
are telecast over Private Line-3.
PL-3 is broadcast over channel
3 in the dorms and on channel 11
on televisions hooked up to the
ABAR cable.
College Bowl is sponsored by
the Inter-Fraternity Council and
Panhellenic.

DeBerry said. He said that Mi
grant Labor workers and others
might also be considered.
However, DeBerry noted that
all applicants must meet certain
standards. The joint selection
board, representing the OEO and
the Experiment in International
Living, will meet in March to
consider nominees between the
ages of 18 and 30, who come from
disadvantaged backgrounds, and
have the ability and maturity to
benefit from the experience. De
Berry also said applicants must
be unpaid for their work.
To Foreign Countries
The seven winners will go to
different foreign countries for
two months this summer, where
they will live with families and
participate in the activities of
Peace Corps volunteers wherever
possible.
