Jim Hannon, the teams top

must face what is in Anderson’s
words "the best" Oregon State
frosh squad ever assembled at
6 p.m. Friday evening and again
at 2:30 Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers have three all •
state players (two from Oregon,
one from Washington), one all
city performer from Los Angeles,
and another all-stater, this one
from the A-2 ranks, who played
for Kiddle.
Enough said? There’s more . . .
One of those all-staters—Vince
Fritz from Portland's Central
Catholic—was the most sought -
after prepster in Oregon last
year.
"He’s far and away the best
freshman in the state," says An
derson. "And outside of UCLA, he
is probably the best on the
coast."
So the Ducklings have their
work cut out for them.
Ball Control
Anderson had planned on run
ning with OSU: “but now that
Hannon’s gone, we'll have to play
ball-control ... I doubt that
we’ll get more than just one
shot at a time at the basket."
The frosh, however, definitely
have plans on winning . . . and
there's reason to suspect that
they might pull it off.
The Oregon Medical-Dental
School that the Ducklings beat
last weekend beat the Rooks ear
lier in the year.
‘ But, says Anderson, “to beat
the Beavers—especially without
Hannon—we're going to have to
play our best game this year. I
think we can. Everybody seems to
think that our season ends after
this week.”
Hannon, incidentally, will be
eligible for varsity competition
next year: and will continue to
work with the freshman.
“He definitely has a future.
Even now, he's probably a better
rebounder than anyone on the
varsity,” said Anderson.
Wrestlers Ready
Wrestling coach Art Keith,
who handles both the varsity and
frosh, is also preparing his fresh
man for action this weekend.
The matmen meet Portland
State at approximately 6:30 Sat
urday afternoon—or, immediate
ly following the freshman basket
ball game.
“I don't know much about Port
land State’s frosh,” said Keith.
“Except that they're always good.
They’ll give us plenty of compe
tition.”
And whereas hoop coach Jerry
Anderson has lost a performer,
Keith seems to have "found” one.
“John Fralick, our 160 pounder,
has been looking exceptionally
well in practice lately," said
Keith. “He’s been trying the new
moves, and, more important —
has been making them work.”
“Basically, though, our team
has balance.”
Freshman swimmers will com
pete in the Dick Strite Memorial
championships this weekend at
the YMCA pool ... a meet that
annually draws upward from 400
athletes, and from places as far
away as Montana and Colorado.

According to coach Don Van
Rossen, the prime concern of the
Ducklings will he to better in
dividual marks "a team trophy,
though, would he nice."
Principal attention will be fo
cused to one Stephen Rond who
wasn't even listed on the fresh
man swim roster when the year
started.
But that's only because he was at
his home in New Zealand at the
time. Since he arrived in Eugene,
however, he has broken two fresh
men records: both at a meet last
week in Portland.
Bond, a cousin of Oregon rug
by coach Bruce Howe (guess
who "sold” him on Oregon?),
swam the 1650 yard and 500
yard freestyle events in 19:02 and
5:21 respectively.
Other performers to watch, ac
cording to Van Rossen, include
Stephen Cowden from Santa Cruz,
Calif., Mike Dowling, South Eu
gene, and Wayne Schwandt, a
diver from North Eugene who.
according to Van Rossen, is "get
ting good enough to be in the
middle of the PAC championships
next year.”
