“Huey is their top performer,”
stated Van Itossen.
Wille turned in the nation’s
eighth fastest 100-yard breast
stroke time a year ago. He is a
stand-out in both the 100- and
200-yard breaststroke, and swims
in the 400-yard relay medley.
“In Wille, OSU has one more
returning All American than we
do," added Van Itossen.

the team's performance in prac
tice this week. "The kids are
looking good in practice," he said.
“They've been responding real
well. The riding's been getting
better and we re working hard on
conditioning."
He added that Malpass “has
been looking better in practice
than he did on the trip. He’s
been making some good shots on
takedowns."
The OCR match Friday is
scheduled for 8 pm., while the
Saturday BSC bout is set for 7:30
pm.
In regards to the Ducks, Van
Rossen stated that they have gone
to three workouts a day in prepa
ration for the league finals.
Ducks Await Finals
"We’re working towards the
qualifying times for the finals,”
he said.
In order to qualify for this sea
son’s finals, a swimmer must
equal the slowest time in his
event during last season’s finals
Through four league meets, top
Duck performers have been jun
ior Monty Holding and sophomore
speedster Jay Greening.
Holding has picked up three
firsts in the 200-yard butterfly.
He is yet to be defeated in this
event. He also swims some of the
freestyle events.

first in the UCLA meet last Sat
urday. Wcbfoot Don Merkt cap
tured second in this event, top
ping the 200-point mark for the
first time this season with 201.05
points.
Team Works Hard
Van Rossen said that the dif
ference bed,ween this team and
past ones is in “how much they
practice.”
“These boys really work hard,”
he stated.
On paper, it looks as if Oregon
will reward itself with a victory
over OSU this time around. But
Van ftossen expresses the situa
tion best:
“We should beat them, but
everytime Oregon and Oregon
State athletic teams meet, you
can’t tell what will happen.”
