Armstrong Not Scheduled;
Alabama Students Object
TUSCALOOSA, Ala -(Cl’S) • A
decision by the University of Ala
bama administration to prevent
entertainer Louis Armstrong
from appearing on the campus
lias met with strong student ob
jection.
The administration had ‘ad
vised" a student organization not
to contract with Armstrong, a Ne
gro, for an appearance at the or
ganizations’ Festival of Arts in
February. The university admin
istration denied that its decision
had anything to do with race.
As a result of the incident,
which attracted national atten
tion when it was reported in the
student newspaper, the Crimson
White, the Alabama student gov
eminent unanimously passed a
resolution asking that “the ad
ministration repeal its ban on
the appearance of I.ouis Arm
strong and his All Stars.”
A student group circulated a
petition requesting that Arm
strong be allowed to appear, but
later withdrew it on grounds that
"due to the distortions of the
controversy by the national news
medias, (it) could do nothing but
harm the university.”
The group said that its original
decision to petition “had nothing
to do with the racial issue, but
Group to Seek
Fluoride Repeal
EUGENE i AP)—A group seek
ing repeal of the proposal ap
proved in November to fluoridate
Eugene’s drinking water also will
start circulating petitions soon,
calling for the city to provide
fluoride for individual use.
Eric Cooper, spokesman for the
Citizens Council Against Water
Fluoridation, said that the city
could provide fluoride in tablets
or drops at low cost to those who
want it and thus "the compulsive
ingestion of sodium fluoride by
those w'ho do not desire it will1
be eliminated.”
The petitions seeking repeal of
the November vote have been in
circulation and those supplement
ing the plan with city-provided
individual fluoride portions will
be ready in about a week. Cooper
said.

"We dropped the petition," n
group spokesman said, "not lie
cause our feelings about wanting
the entertainer on campus have
changed, but because the original
purpose of the petition had be
come distorted by the racial im
plications which the national news
medias have placed on the contro
versy."
Exactly what role—if any —
the question of race had in the in
cident was unclear. The univer
sity administration issued a state
ment denying that Armstrong’s
race had anything to do with the
decision not to have him appear,
but it did not offer any explana
tion for its action.
The statement said "The ad
ministration of the University of
Alabama advised the student Co
tillion Club not to contract Louis
Armstrong for an appearance in
February. The Cotillion Club fol
lowed the advice of the adminis
tration.
“The university does not have
a policy against the appearance of
Negro entertainers and the posi
tion of the administration in this
case is not based on the race of
Mr Armstrong and his group
Negro entertainers appear on this
campus every week at different
student functions
“Negotiations with the Louis
Armstrong group had not reach
ed the point of a contract and
therefore, there was no "cancel
lation" of a scheduled appear
ance.
"The university administration
will not debate the reasons for
the advice Riven in this instance ”
The Crimson White editorial
ized that the “crisis is much big
ger than Louis Armstrong or any
Negro entertainer. It is a crisis
that encompasses and may set a
dangerous precedent for the en
tire cultural and academic scope
of the university.”
The paper said the incident "is
not racial in the sense of segrega
tion or integration because that
is no longer relevant at this uni
versity in academic, cultural or
social levels. It is a racial mat
ter in as much as Louis Armstrong
is a Negro and that, of course,
does have an important bearing
on the problem.”
The paper, which viewed the
problem primarily as one of aca
demic freedom rather than of
race, said:
"Faced with a problem crucial
to any Southern institution our
students reacted in a commenda
ble and intelligent manner Hut
the students are not listened to
on this campus when it comes to
matters affecting the university
It is okay for them to talk about
racial problems in Mississippi, to
discuss college mores in panel dis
cussion, to send telegrams con
gratulating Southern California
Hut it is not all right for them
to seek knowledge about h o w
things are at home "
