Hot Hitting UO Runs Win String to 11

It was a hitter’s weekend.
That is. if you were a hitter
on Oregon's baseball team.
The Webfoots rapped out 3(5
hits against the University of
Portland as they swept a three
game series from the hapless Pi
lots. The three wins ran Ore
gon’s winning streak to 11.
Friday the Ducks trounced
Portland, 12-0. behind the five
hit pitching of Robbie Snow.
On Saturday Oregon swept a
doubleheader from the Pilots, 11
5 and 11-1.
On Friday rain shortened the
Duck Golfers
Beat Beavers
Oregon toppled Oregon State.
14-13. in a close golf match Fri
day in Corvallis.
John Hedlund and Mike Hum
phreys were the big men for Ore
gon. Hedlund was the medalist
with a 67 and Humphreys won
the deciding match, picking up
three points against the Beavers
Steve Vrtiska.
The only other Oregon indivi
dual winner was Tom Kabler but
Hedlund and Bill Ward won one
of the best ball competitions and
Kabler and Butch Ogilvy man
aged a tie in another one.
Said Duck coach Elwood Kret
singer: “It was real clutch golf.
I was very pleased with the way
the boys came through when they
knew they had to.”
The Frosh also beat Oregon
State over the weekend, 12-6, be
hind medalist Carvel Nelson.

Cal Dean and Don Banderas
homered in Friday’s game. H. D
Murphy, Sandy Nosier. Dean, and
Banderas each had two hits and
Murphy and Banderas drove in
three runs apiece.
Oregon scored first in the sec
ond inning when Dean hit his
homer with one man on. In the
fourth Banderas homered and
got a two-run single as the
Ducks struck for six runs. Terry
Leininger contributed a two-run
double to the rally.
The Ducks got four more runs
in the fifth. Murphy’s bases load- j
ed double was the big hit. Pilot
pitcher Ron DeVall contributed
to his own downfall by walking i
two, hitting a batter and throw
ing two wild pitches.
Snow Fitches wen
Snow pitched well, giving up
five hits, striking out seven, and
not walking a man. He has now
pitched 22 consecutive innings
without giving up a run. Snow’s
victory gave him a 3-1 record for
the season.
In Saturday's first game the
Ducks found themselves behind
for the only time in the series.

The Ducks came back with four
runs in the second. Banderas sin
gled. stole second, and came in on
Ken Jensen's single McLeod
walked, and then Leininger sin
gled home Jensen. Both McLeod
and Leininger advanced on a pass
ed ball and scored on Jeff Allen’s
single.
Channing Triples In Madden
The Pilots scored again in the
third when Madden singled and
scored when Channing hit a triple
that bounced off the top of the
right field fence at the 360 foot
mark.

Four for Five On Weekend
The Ducks also scored in the
third as Murphy singled and came
home on Banderas' 360 foot dou
ble.
In the fourth the Ducks pick
ed up three more runs. McLeod
singled and went to second on an
error. Leininger was also safe on
an error, and Allen walked. Mc
Leod scored on a wild pitch, and
then Murphy brought Allen and
Leininger home with a single.
In the Pilot sixth Mike Adams
and Russ Aldridge singled and
both scored as Vetter made his
third error of the game.
Ducks Add Three Runs
The Ducks picked up three
more runs in their half of the
sixth. Dean singled and Vetter
made up for the errors by driv
ing him in with a booming triple.
Banderas then hit a 350-foot shot
over the left field fence for the
final Oregon runs.
McLeod was not his sharpest,
but he gave up only one earned
run He struck out two and walk
ed only one as he ran his season
record at 3-1.
In Saturday's second game

For Olympic Meet
Oregon freshman Curt Scott
won the 125'£ pound champion
ship in the Western Regional
Olympic wrestling tryouts last
weekend.
Scott defeated Gary Head of
OSU, the Pacific Coast champion
ship, 6-2 in his last match, to win
The victory makes him eligible to
compete in the final Olympic try
outs this summer at the New York
World’s Fair.
Oregon Coach Mike Reuter
said that Scott may be unable to
go because of lack of finances.
Bruce Glenn just missed qual
ifying at 171 pounds when he
finished third. He was beating
winner Lynn Kaufman of OSU
when Kaufmann pinned him
Glenn later defeated Ed Dewitt,
who finished second, but he had
run up too many points against
himself in the loss to Kaufman.

was his second against no losses

Peery aboard was the big blow.
The Pilots scored in the second
when Madden singled and went
to third on Doug Schillinger’s sin

second when Jansen was safe on
an error and Del Jordan doubled
