Webfoots Test Montana
It takes a loss to Portland to
snap the Oregon Ducks back to
reality.
Early in January the Ducks
lost a squeaker to the Pilots in
Portland. Both teams threw the
hall around crazily. Tuesday
night the Ducks again were lured
into playing the Pilots' type of
basketball and were nailed with
an 88 80 loss
After the earlier loss. Duck
Coach Steve Belko installed a
disciplined offense and Oregon
knocked off nationally ranked
Oregon State. It looks like it's
hack to a more determined, ball
control type of offense again for
Oregon, this weekend against
Montana.
More Ball Control
“I think we'll probably play
more ball control this week,” said
Belko.
"We were looking for the first
open shot,” against Portland, he
said. "We can't throw the ball
up there like we did against
Gonzaga.”
Belko also cited the inability
to score on the fast break as a
contributing factor to the Ore
gon loss. "We threw the ball

Devine Cup Tilt
The Devine Cup will he at
stake Saturday when Oregon and
Oregon State ruggers meet at
Corvallis in a league game, be
ginning at 2 p m.
Since the Beavers won the first
game. 19-8. the Ducks need a
win Saturday to keep their hopes
alive for taking the cup for the
third year in a row. If neces
sary, a third match will be play
ed in March.
According to team spokesman,
Tom Cash. Oregon "has made
much over all improvement in fit
ness and play" since its last meet
ing with OSU. Forward Mickey
Ording. who was injured in that
match, is back as is scrum half
Bill Laughlin who was also in
jured. Returning to action after
a case of measles is Eric Lind
ner.
In league play thus far, the
Ducks have won none, lost one
and tied one.
Ducks Need Game;
Face Winless UP
The Portland Pilots soccer
team holds part of the balance
mechanism in the Oregon drive
toward state soccer supremacy.
Saturday’s game will see the
Ducks take on the winless Pi
lots but the element of chance
is always present. The Ducks did
lose to Lewis and Clark — a
supposedly inferior team.
The other end of the balance
is held by Lewis and Clark and
they play OSU this weekend.
Wins for the Beavers and Ducks
will keep the two tied for first
place and a playoff will result.
A combination of an Oregon loss
and Beaver victory will see the
Ducks looking at next year with
no Kyllman trophy to defend.
The Oregon players are sched
uled to leave the P.E. building
at 11 Saturday morning.

Another thing that didn't help
the Ducks was Steve Jones' ina

ltelko said Jones has had his
problems in the last four games
—.not only against Portland. And
Belko doesn’t know what it is.
For the Ducks to win consistent
ly, Jones must score consistently,
since most of the Ducks’ plays are
geared for his outside jump shot
