Oregon's varsity bowlers saw
their first action of the school
wear Sunday, when they met Eu
gene's top bowlers, the Allison
All-Stars, in a tight match on the
SU lanes.
The All-Stars edged Oregon’s
first team by eight pins. 2973 to
2965. while the junior varsity's
comeback efforts netted it a 2866
2759 victory over the All-Star
second team.
Top bowler of the day was Ore
gon's Eric Johnson who sparked
the junior varsity with a 675
series. Johnson rolled a 190 first
game and then came back with
236 in which he threw nine strikes
and converted two spares. A 7-10
split in the seventh prevented a
higher score. With 100 in the fifth
frame of the second game, he
then shot six straight strikes and
left the 10 pin for a 249.
Leading the varsity was sopho
more Dennis Murphy who came
through with games of 193, 227
and 204. good for 624.
Three All-Stars Shoot 600

members, turned in 600 series.
Jim Baxley had 641. Dwaine Tripp
618 and Don Kutz 611. High man

‘‘It doesn't look very good for a
week or so.” said wrestling coach
Mike Reuter.
Reuter had just returned with
his varsity wrestling team from
a four-day road trip that all but
took the toll of his squad.
A number of things happened
on the trip that left Reuter in a
state of puzzlement:
• Four of Oregon's front-line
wrestlers are on the doubtful list
for the Oregon State meet this
weekend — Monrad Bjorge (137
lbs.i, Doug Robertson (130 lbs.!.
Doug Muck (157 lbs.), and Bruce
Glenn (167 lbs.).
• The Ducks lost. 16-14. to
Central Washington when, with
the presence of Muck and Bjorge.
they may have won handily.
Bjorge. who lost only 2-0 in his
match against Multnomah Athletic
Club, is presently nursing a strain
ed deltoid muscle and is not ex
pected to see action against the
Beavers. Reuter said the X-rays
.showed the injury not to be ser
ious.
Muck. Robertson, and Glenn
are a bewildering trio. Robertson
wrestled in four matches, but Reu
ter said. “He didn't look very
good.” neither in performance nor
physical appearance. He may have
the flu.
Muck, on the other hand, wres
tled only one match and won by
a forfeit against Washington
State. Then against Eastern Ore
gon College in the last meet of the
trip. Muck was tied at 0-0 when
the first round ended and he al
most passed out. Reuter said he
withdrew Muck from the match
Muck's forfeit defeat is the first
duel-meet match he has lost since
his sophomore year.
Glenn, too, failed to meet the
physical standards needed to com
plete a four-day trip With only 10
seconds remaining in his match
against EOC’s Chuck Holliday and
the match tied. 6-6, Glenn passed
out. Holliday was awarded a take
down and the match. 8-6.
Things don't look very good
for a week or so.

Renter was greatly pleased with
the performance of sophomore
Bob Mitchell, though. Mitchell,
from Klamath Falls, completed
the trip undefeated in four
matches — one an exhibition
against MAC.
“lie was the outstanding wres
tler on the trip,” said Reuter.
“He's a tremendous leg-wrestler.
He looks like he's in trouble all
the time, but when he meets
someone with no leg experience
he over-powers them.”
Mitchell, who was 8-0 as a fresh
man. is still undefeated as a col
lege wrestler with 11 wins.
Against MAC and EOC he com
peted at 157 lbs., while he wres
tled at 167 against WSU.
Another wrestler who received
plaudits from Reuter was former
Pacific Coast 167-lb. champion Bob
Keeney.
Keeney moved up from his 177
lb. position in the final two
matches to post two victories in
the heavyweight division
His first win was against WSU’s
Randy Cooper, last year's Coast
champion, 6-3. Keeney weighed
181. while Cooper scaled about
200 lbs.
Against EOC Keeney met 240
lb. Steve Strughum, and came
away with a 2-0 victory. “He did
a real good job.” said Reuter.
Reuter said because of Strughum’s
size, Keeney had some difficulty
in doing anything with the big
man.
The Ducks were 2-2 on the road
trip, not bad considering the
matches were on successive days
and the team's physical condition
Oregon lost the first two matches.
22-8 to MAC and 16 14 to Central
Washington, and won the final
two matches against WSU and
EOC, 25-5 and 23-11 respectively.
Against WSU, Oregon didn’t lose
a match, but were forced to for
feit at Bjorge’s 137-lb. weight.

In commenting about the over

ten pin gave all the bowlers
trouble and kept the scoring

Starnes rolled 604 for the varsity
team.
Other varsity scores were: Ron

Win Two Meets
Big Jeff McCrea was a mainstay
of Ed Johns’ frosh football team
last fall.
Now he’s helping Johns’ fresh
man wrestlers win
Last Friday McCrea won with a
pin in just 13 seconds of the first
round as the Duckling grapplers
trounced Kelso High School of
Washington, 31-10
And Saturday the big heavy
weight nabbed another victory—
by decision this time. Oregon beat
OTI, 17-11.
Says Johns of McCrea: "He’s
strong. He's got lots to learn,
but he’s a real horse."
McCrea was far from being the
only winner against Kelso, though
In fact, five Ducklings won on
pins, three more on decisions.
Wayne Hanson’s pin in 1:38 of
round one in his 177 pound match
was the second pin
Jim Lowe, Johns' 157-pound
ace, was the only wrestler to pin
his opponent in both meets.
The Ducklings had a much
tougher time against OTI than
they did against Kelso The Web
foots won only four matches, plus j
a forfeit. But it was enough to
beat the Owls.
OREGON JUNIOR varsity team member l.arry Jones picks up
the seven pin in bowling action against the Allison’s all star sec
ond team Sunday. Jones rolled a 599 series to aid his mates, as
they whipped their opponents, 2H*jfi to 2759. Oregon’s varsity was
edged by Allison's 2973 to 29t»5.
