Webfoots Meet Bears

Oregon’s Webfoots take to the
road this Friday and Saturday for
a rugged pair with California’s
Golden Bears. The Ducks still
hoping for a shot at the five hun
dred mark will take a 6-8 record
into Friday’s contest at Harmon

In contrast, the Bears are rid
ing fairly high on the season with
an overall record of 10-4, but in
Big Six action the Bears arc rid
ing a two game losing streak, and
are currently holding down the
third spot in Big Six standings.
Fresh from semester break the
California cagers are returning to
the maples with plans for closing
the gap in the Big Six which sep
arates them and league leading
Stanford.
California defeated the Ducks
78-46 in the final round of the
Far West Classic in Portland on
December 29 when the Bears
turned a close fought battle into
a second-half romp. Although the
final margin was 32 points the
game was much closer than the
score would indicate. The Bears
held a nine point halftime lead
which was quickly cut to six
points by the Ducks with 15 min
utes to go. After this point the
Ducks went stone cold potting
only 25 per cent of their fielders
while the Bears got red hot and
blazed away at a fantastic 61.3
per cent pace.
Oregon’s starting lineup is go
ing through another juggling act.
Oregon coach Steve Belko has de
finite plans for starting Steve
Jones and Glenn Moore. The oth
er starting posts are still wide
open, and Belko says he doesn’t
have the slightest idea who the
other starters will be.
So far the combined performan
ces of Jones and Moore have been
the key to the Wcbfoot success.
In the winning efforts. Jones and
Moore have combined for a 33
point average between them.
Jones is the leading Duck scorer
with a total point production of
219 points for a 15 G average per
game. Moore is second with 174
points for a 13.4 average per
game.
The Bears arc led by Camden
Wall, a 6-10 center. Wall, a jun
ior, has returned to Cal cage ac
tion after a two year layoff.
Another front-line performer, Jim
Smith, a 6-5 senior, is filling the
gap in previous Bear frontline
problems. In only limited action
last year. Smith scored 117 points
and picked off 86 rebounds. So
for this season Smith has posted a
15 5 average per game.
Friday night’s tipoff time will
be P p.m . and Saturday night’s
contest is slated to be televised
in the Berkeley area.

High-Scoring Frosh
Set For Weekend
Oregon’s high-scoring, high fly
ing freshman basketball team ex
pects to get back into its winning
ways this weekend with a double
bili against the Sweet Home AAU
in Eugene anil the University of
Portland Frosh in Portland.
The Duckling- have compiled a
six win, one loss record so far
this season including a five game
winning streak before they were
upset by Claudia's of Portland.
Their record Ins been accom
plished by the best scoring clip
ever produced by a University of
Oregon freshman basketball team.
The Frosh are currently averag
ing 79 1 points per game and have
scored 90 points or more in four
of their games.
Flashy Jim Barnett, the high
scoring guai I, paces the Duck
ling’s point parade with 15fi points
in seven games for a 22.3 average
per game. Barnett is from Kivor
j side, California where he was
selected unanimously to the Cali
fornia Interscholastic Federation
first team after his senior year in
high school.
Barnett is expected to get plen
ty of help from team mates Dave
Kafoury. John Franz and Bill Jen
nings.
Kafoury has taken over for the
injured Rick Potter and has tilled
in very well os scoring help for
Barnett. Kafonry luis raised liis
average to over ten points per
game since he took over lor Pot
ter.
Franz and Jennings, both for
wards, also have averages in dou
ble figur< Franz has scored 80
points for an 11.4 average and
Jennings has contributed 79 for
an 11.3 rate.
These four along with center

Not much is known about the
