'Civil Liberties' Theme
Of October Celebration

Washington, D.C., will be the
convocation speaker at the an
mud Charter Day celebration on
October Id.
TIIK 1962 Charter Day will
have the theme of “Civil Liber
ties" in honor of the one hun
dredth anniversary of the Email
cipation Proclamation. This is the ;
first time a theme has been used.
"We will undoubtedly continue
this policy,” Flemming said. He

Nahrit, an educator and admin
istrator of note, has long been a
leader in the work for civil rights
and anti segregation His addle s

known for its attempts to insure
that colored people have a maxi
mum opportunity to benefit from
higher education.
A graduate of Morehouse Col
lege in Atlanta, Ga., Nahrit re
ccived his doctor of jurispru
dence degree from Northwestern
University, lie has since received
honorary doctorates from More
house College and Lincoln Uni
versity.
HE HAS BEEN on the faculty
of Howard University since 1936,
teaching in the School of Law
and serving in administrative of
fices. He has been administrative
assistant to the president, direc
tor of public relations, secretary
to the university, dean of the
School of Law, and, since 1961,!
president of the university.
In 1959 and 1960, he was ad- j
visor to the U. S. delegation to t
the International Labor Organiza
tion in Geneva. He is legal advis
or to the reorganization of the ex
ecutive branch of the government
of the Virgin Islands, and a mem
ber of the board of trustees of
Howard University.
